To think evening primrose oil is Amazing!

I was suffering with awful PMS one week before my period and was recommended by my mum to try Evening Primrose Oil.

I've been taking it for 6 weeks and just looked at my FLO app and im due in one day and have had NO pms symptoms at all!!

It's also made me more calm in general. I take 1000mg per day.

Thought this could help anyone suffering from PMS! I was absolutely awful for one week before period was due (my poor DH) - irritable, breast hurt, awful mood swings, cramps - the full works.

Agreed! I definitely notice a difference when I remember to take it in the week before my period.

Mumsnet disclaimer - of course it won’t work for everyone.....

ShirleyPhallus · 06/01/2020 08:27

Yes it’s been amazing for me, really helped calm down my PMS massively

It’s great for me too, I take 2 of the high strength the week before period and 1 the rest of the month (daily) also take high strength vit D and vit B12 - combined with good food, lots of water and my energy levels and general mood have dramatically improved over the past year

I’m currently reading this book because I’m peri menopausal and it’s very interesting. Talks quite a bit about PMT.

Does it interfere with the contraceptive pill?

Loveliveexplore · 06/01/2020 08:32

I was so skeptical regarding whether or not it would work and am so happy it has. I take it daily throughout my whole cycle. Its also made me more calm in general, have you found that too?

I also take maca, Vitamin b6 and folic acid.

No it does not interfere with contraceptive pill as far as I'm aware. @Selfsettling3

It's also very good for breast pain.

Not quite the same topic, but my husband suffers from Reynaud and a couple of years ago I started giving him evening primrose oil in a daily dose and it's helped him hugely.
I have heard positive things about it helping with PMT and other menstrual problems, along with being helpful to menopausal women with hot flushes etc.
I don't think it would harm anyone to give it a go.

Orangeblossom78 · 06/01/2020 09:00

But how does it work?

I am finding St John's wort quite helpful for perimenopause

Loveliveexplore · 06/01/2020 09:04

It balances out your hormones. Have a Google and you will see.

@Chuffit that's great that it's helped your husband.

I may have just been lucky but rather than use HRT as soon as my menopausal symptoms started, I tried Evening Primrose Oil.
It was a God send. Halo
DD is now peri menopausal and will give it a go with the proviso that if there's no response then she sees the doctor to discuss other options.

Dubbadubbadumdum · 06/01/2020 10:27

A word of warning-if you are trying to conceive, Evening Primrose oil is only recommended during menstruation and up to ovulation.

Orangeblossom78 · 06/01/2020 10:36

Right might have a go. A few years ago I had a benign breast thing and at the breast clinic they gave me a leaflet on it. I had forgotten about that. So they obviously recommended it. Wonder if any issue with St Johns wort. (it is meant to stop other things working or something). Probably OK
