To ask for your old wives tale cold and flu “cures”

Just that really. I’ve been ill with a cold / flu type virus for a month now and still feeling horrendous. What do you swear by for a cold? I’ve tried all the usual stuff - keeping hydrated, paracetamol, olbas oil, Sudafed, strepsils, honey and lemon drink etc etc. Having missed the majority of Christmas, at the very least I’d like to be feeling a bit better before I go back to work on Monday.

Chew small pieces of ginger or garlic. Gargle with warm salt water. Drink only warm drinks, and double the amount per day than you usually would. Avoid caffeine. Spend a lot of time resting. Go for slow, gentle walks. Sleep more.

I think you should see a doctor if you’ve been ill that long and over the counter medicine isn’t working.

FizzyIce · 04/01/2020 18:10

I’d like some too.
Been in bed for 4 days and have to be back at work on Tuesday .
Only thing that helps a little is ibuprofen, paracetamol or any of those cold and flu tablets do nothing for me .

Traynorbird · 04/01/2020 18:59

Hot water, cloves, honey and brandy.

Kitkatandcoffee · 04/01/2020 19:04

Slice an onion, cover with a lot of sugar. Seal in a container put in fridge overnight. Drain of the liquid. Take a couple of teaspoons now and then.
Son swears on eating raw garlic. He always seemed to stop his cold in its track. Hope you feel better soon.

Mummyshark2019 · 04/01/2020 20:12

Onions in your socks when you sleep.

Second seeing a doctor. I did after experiencing the same for the whole of December and it turned out I had tonsillitis and an ear infection which required two different antibiotics. I'd felt just generally 'rotten' with the 'cold' I had that I didn't even realise I had infections. After 48 hours on antibiotics I felt amazing, actually human again! I only went to the Dr because my mum nagged me to, fully expecting them to say it's just a virus.

The hottest curry you can eat.

Drink hot blackcurrant drink.

Daftodil · 04/01/2020 20:24

Hot toddy works for me (whiskey, lemon, honey & hot water). And bed rest.

Hope you feel better soon Flowers

I tried this - and I swear I felt better the next day. It was absolutely vile though.

TimeforanotherChange · 04/01/2020 20:25

Didn't use the weird seed thing, btw. Have never heard of it!

AllergicToAMop · 04/01/2020 20:28

Chicken garlic soup is my fave.
I usually recommend just chicken soup because people are not fan of garlic often.
Get or make a proper chicken stock. More natural the better. Either just have a chicken soup or...
Boil potatoes cut in small pieces. Handful? Drpends on hunger. Make croutons.
Bring stock to boil while adding marjoram and bit of minced garlic. Cook for couple of min. Meanwhile put the potatoes in a bowl and mix with crapload of garlic. Top up with croutons, grated cheese (not cheddar something like edam or gouda, melty and stringy) and pour the hot stock over.
Enjoy

Echinacea can help give your immune system a boost. Good luck, I hope you can kick it soon.

Leflic · 04/01/2020 20:28

Trinny and Susanah have a cold remedy which I use.

You boil garlic, lemon, ginger and a chilli for a bit. Strain and drink with a spoon of honey.

Fcukthisshit · 04/01/2020 20:44

Thanks all - lots to try there!

I have been to the GP (3 times over the last month) as it did start as a chest infection and I’m asthmatic. I’ve done 2 courses of steroids and a course of antibiotics so far but the GP said it’s just viral now so not much that can be done.

@AllergicToAMop I ordered the stuff to make a chicken soup with my ASDA shop tonight but they apparently have no chicken Hmm I have everything else now though so I’ll pick some up tomorrow.

@TimeforanotherChange that looks an interested remedy. Might give the enema a miss though Shock

I always try to get more vitamin c to boost my immune system. Taking multivitamins.
I'll also make my poorly vegetable soup. Or a big stew with a crapload of veggies in for the antioxidants and general nutritional boost. Always works for me.

I gave my sick 3 year old DS some of my 6 month old DDs expressed breastmilk and he was pretty much back to normal the next day. I thought that was amazing! She had the same cold before him and the antibody must have passed to him too. Mother nature is a legend!!

I hope you feel better soon. Flowers

AllergicToAMop · 04/01/2020 20:57

@Fcukthisshit of you are doing the garlic one, make sure you don't have to meet anyone for the rest of a day😂

Auridon4life · 04/01/2020 21:02

Home made garlic bread is delicious

Nelly325 · 04/01/2020 21:04

Lots of effervescent vitamin c

Fcukthisshit · 04/01/2020 21:23

Newname1978 · 04/01/2020 21:24

I second echinacea

MistyCloud · 04/01/2020 21:26

@Fcukthisshit

Brandy.

Neat.

With 5 or 6 ice cubes. 2 or 3 glasses for at LEAST 3 or 4 nights in a row.

Hope you feel better soon. Sad

DH was running a cold. I found a bottle of mead we got ages ago as a present, he heated it up with a cinnamon stick and cloves and put a half of lemon into it. Half a bottle later and he was feeling much better and also much pleasant to be around than his usual man flu himself so bonus points for it.

ClientListQueen · 04/01/2020 21:34

There's definitely something going round. I've been unwell since 27th dec. left the house for the first time today, went to Morrison's and there was no lemsip, no vitamin c, no tissues... shelves were empty in the medicine section!
