10/11 year old boy with bad breath?

Dentist is in feb but in August when he last went there weren’t any problems. He has been under the weather over xmas which is probably the cause this time but I have noticed it a little in the past too. I’m guessing it’s down to tooth brushing being inadequate. I’m going to watch him tonight. Is it a hormone / growing up thing too? I seem to remember having bad breath around the same age and being told it was due to ‘growing up’ but never really believed it.

Is he getting his second permanent molars?

BabbleBee · 04/01/2020 13:35

Tonsils?

Foodtheif · 04/01/2020 13:36

I don’t know. I can ask about them when we go to the dentist. Tonsils - i think they look ok but I’m not a doctor. He has had a cheery cough lately and I wondered if it could be something to do with that.

Would an electric toothbrush help with more thorough brushing?

Foodtheif · 04/01/2020 13:40

He does have an electric toothbrush. I think maybe he is just not bothering to
clean them properly all over / or for long enough.

Is it a sweet smell a little like pear drops?

Not to panic you but if he is under the weather, not well and his breath smells sweet it could be diabetes.

Foodtheif · 04/01/2020 13:42

No it’s not like that. (I do have a child with diabetes) i don’t really know how to describe it. More like morning breath/ slightly sour almost. Just unpleasant really.

A sinus infection can cause bad breath too. If his dental hygiene I should good, it is a sign of ill health.

SagelyNodding · 04/01/2020 13:44

Does he have a mouth ulcer?

Foghead · 04/01/2020 13:47

Make sure he really brushes well. I did my 11yr olds for him every now and then because of this issue! Funny how as soon as I brushed them, the smell would be gone.
I also got him to rinse his mouth out with salt water every now and then. Not sure if that helps but he’s ok now.

I have twins. One always has bad breath in the morning, really stinky. The other is fine. Just different kids. We use disclosing tablets weekly, it ensures they are both brushing correctly.

My teen ds has dog shit breath his is down to lack of brushing or not doing properly. He doesn't listen... Despite me saying the other day that I timed the brushing... 22 seconds!
