Or does Apple get worse with every update?

Not only did the latest update wipe the parental controls off my DC's iPad it has merged the video and tv apps.
I used to be able to block the tv app and she could watch films I put on the iPad.
Now, they're combined and I can't find the answer to how to restrict it.

I have in app purchases switched off but the rent/buy buttons for new movies are still there and not greyed our. Does this mean she can rent or buy new movies or will it not let her?

How can I stop it suggesting that she watches Frozen and other movies and programs?

Mine seems to have made the battery wear down quicker?

I have no useful advice other than to say ignore gindaddy, I’ve noticed they comment rude/unhelpful things on pretty much every thread now so clearly looking for a reaction!

“ Or you could forgo the electronic nanny entirely and supervise your DC ..”

What an embarrassment. Mortified for you.

AgentJohnson · 03/01/2020 08:07

Or you could forgo the electronic nanny entirely and supervise your DC.

There’s a lot of truth in this statement. You might want to rethink how much screen time your child is having if this such a concern for you. I’m not against screens but they have become a parenting crutch whose overuse is not helping the healthy development of children.

TwoZeroTwoZero · 03/01/2020 08:53

What happens if you don't do (or if you uninstall) the update? Will it stop working?

concooktion · 03/01/2020 09:49

I'm not asking if my DC is having too much screen time. Or if I'm too lenient in making sure they do chores, reading, playing with real life toys and going on a 1.5 hour hike before I let them have a screen during the holidays.

I'm asking how to put restrictions on after the latest update which seemingly ignores the "no in app purchases" restrictions and advertises stuff to my child.

No one mentioned overuse so you can pop back down into your box now dear.

MayFayner · 03/01/2020 09:55

OP I don’t know the solution to the issue but I agree that the Apple updates are usually a pita.

Inanothertime · 03/01/2020 09:59

Oh dear.

AgentJohnson · 03/01/2020 09:59

Apple has a business model that doesn’t give a crap about what’s healthy for its customers or their wallets and will always do this kind of shit. The price to pay for being in their ecosystem is this, change platform or limit or limit screen time to mitigate the effects.

SerenDippitty · 03/01/2020 10:00

Mine seems to have caused it to suddenly decide the charging cable “may not be supported” even though it had previously been working fine for months.

WarmSausageTea · 03/01/2020 10:03

Fucking hell, exactly one post and the sanctimony begins.

I’m not sure of the solution here, but I really hate it when an op asks a perfectly reasonable question and someone takes the opportunity to issue a snippy swipe at them and their parenting choices 🙄

tibradden · 03/01/2020 10:05

I can’t answer your question re the merge of TV and video apps.
Have you content restriction turned on. this greys out rent/purchase films on our iPad.

AgentJohnson · 03/01/2020 10:22

People can’t be this naive. Apple and other tech business business models are there to make you dependent on their products which allows them to incrementally reduce your options while maximising their profits.

There’s a reason why Apple don’t have user accounts on their devices and why every update defaults are opt out and not in.

I definitely think the battery gets worse on an iPhone with each update.

Yes, I have a new ipad and the battery life has definitely got worse.

SophieSong · 03/01/2020 11:08

How old is your DC? Just asking because with my D.C. I just let him know any in app purchases must be run by me first and that every payment made will send a notification to me so if he does it without asking he loses internet and devices for at the least 1 day per unauthorised £. So far it’s worked well he’s never tried to purchase anything he shouldn’t!

concooktion · 03/01/2020 13:18

Yes, my phone battery is a catastrophe right now, but mainly because I need to reset my battery usage I think.
DC is 7 and has an old iPad. I usually don't let her use it with an internet connection, but there's so little memory it can't hold new films. I have the age appropriate content restrictions on and she has been told to ask me before watching anything. She's only just started reading in English so she has a tendency to press buttons without knowing what they mean!

Mine has stopped powering down when left unused and also when the magnetic cover is closed.

ConfessionsOfTeenageDramaQueen · 03/01/2020 21:14

YANBU but all the big tech companies are the same with their updates - Facebook Gmail etc. They literally employ people to fuck up what was good about their own products.

MissConductUS · 03/01/2020 21:22

Lithium batteries degrade over time. That's why they're only under warranty for a year. Lots of shops will swap out the battery for a new one at a reasonable cost. I did this for our iPhone 6s's and got another 18 months out of them that way.
