To be lying awake worrying about this?

Earlier I stupidly left a plastic spatula in a saucepan that was still on the hob (thought I'd turned it off!) Didnt notice until the spatula handle had melted and bent back over the side of the saucepan. Anyway I had a mild panic about the toxic fumes around the kids and then aired the room and got over it by the time I went to bed. Now I'm thinking about how I actually cooked using it - I used it to cook some mince in another. I stirred with is and flipped the mince around and now I'm worried than some of it would have melted into that pan and I wouldn't have noticed and then fed the food it would have melted into to the kids. I'm sure I've cooked using it this way before- I thought it was heat resistant! Have filled my children with horrible toxins aaaaah? Or AIBU in even giving this a second thought?

They're fine. You're fine.

Go to sleep.

MmmmCheesePuffs · 03/01/2020 02:37

YABU even worrying about this. It will be fine. Chill, go to sleep xx

PanicAndRun · 03/01/2020 02:39

Really gently YABU. They're fine and will be fine.

Depending on their age, they're either out of the stage of putting all kinds of shit in their mouth(sometimes literally) and survived or it's coming and you'll have to learn to breathe through it.

Do you often go worst case scenario/overthink things? Do you suffer from anxiety.

QuestionableMouse · 03/01/2020 02:47

My nephew (18mo) recently ate two crayons and a stick of chalk and he's absolutely fine.

Your kids will be fine too. Try to sleep.

NotAVirtue · 03/01/2020 02:47

You sound like me when I'm in the throes on anxiety. Please try and put it out of your mind. Your kids will be fine. I realise that's easy for me to say but it's true.

Momohmom · 03/01/2020 02:48

I can overthink things yes @panicandrun especially in the middle of the night

Spatulas are designed to flip food around and stir hot foods, that is their job, no toxins or bits will have went in to the mince.

Thanks for the replies

I can imagine myself worrying about something like this, extreme anxiety! But I can say too I'm sure it will be ok OP though understand that horrible over thinking feeling always seems worse this time of night. I once accidentally melted a slow cooker by leaving the hob on and worried about the fumes for ages even after airing place out. One of a billion examples of excess catastrophising that I have so far survived Smile

Creepster · 03/01/2020 03:17

If you can't sleep because of it go and look at the spatula and you will see that no parts came off. It softened but didn't drip. You cleared the fumes immediately.
You did good.

Topseyt · 03/01/2020 03:44

I did this year's ago. It was fine. No need to worry.

I just threw the spatula out.

Aquamarine1029 · 03/01/2020 04:31

I once slow cooked a plastic spoon for 7 hours in a huge batch of chili, which I then fed to my small children before I found the super-heated spoon that was undoubtedly leaching fuck who knows what chemicals into it. They are now 23 and 20 and perfectly healthy. Grin

xJodiex · 03/01/2020 05:07

I think my mother done way worse than this when I was a kid. I'm mid thirties now and seem to be ok Smile

Momohmom · 03/01/2020 07:35

I think mine did too to be honest
