H&M sizing!

I'm a 12 in most shops but I tried an H&M coat on that's a size 6 and it fits but their 12-14 jeans wouldn't do up. How do they do their sizing?! I know there's not a set standard in the U.K. but I've always found their sizing so random?? AIBU to think they literally stick a number in things?? I've had it before, a size 8 skirt fits but other things in a 12-14 are too small??

H&M are terrible for sizing. I typically start at the biggest and work down! (Size 12)

Smashtastick · 30/12/2019 12:20

You can put two of the same identically sized items together in H&M and one is two inches smaller on the waist than the other.

It's terrible and I never shop in there!

Splodgetastic · 30/12/2019 12:25

The sizing is so inconsistent, I agree. I’m a 10 most places, but I used to be an 8 (I was around 8 stone at approx. 5ft5) and I had to get a 16 coat from H&M, yet the jeans were fine!

Merryoldgoat · 30/12/2019 12:29

I don’t there for this very reason - I just can’t be bothered.

checkingforballoons · 30/12/2019 12:33

Yep, it’s random. I’m a 10-12, but in H&M I’m anywhere between a 6 and a 16. I just grab a size in the middle of that range to hold up and then work from there!

HelloCanYouHearMe · 30/12/2019 12:47

Im a size 12, tried on a 12, 14, 16, 18 and a size 20 pair of jeans in there once. The size 20 came half way up my thigh and no further...

Beesandhoneys · 30/12/2019 12:48

The coat is stunning and came home with me but maybe they missed a 1 in front of the 6?!

I refuse to shop in H&M for this reason, you have to take literally a size 4 to a 20 of the same item into the fitting room on the off chance one of them may fit and its bonkers!

How people successfully buy online from there I have no idea

sockittome123 · 30/12/2019 12:51

I don't even bother to try it on half the time - if I hold it up against me and it's mahoosive, I put it back. (Size 8)

vassdal · 30/12/2019 12:52

I agree. They are terrible.
I don't shop there any more.
Jeans seem to be sized very small.
I just can't be bothered with faffing about trying on all kinds of sizes until I find something that fits. I've come to the conclusion that they don't make things that suit my body shape at all.

f00k · 30/12/2019 12:53

Their sizing is ridiculous. I'm sure a couple of years ago they re-did their sizing to make it more consistent. Obviously didn't work. I'm a 10-12 but can be anywhere from a 10 to a 14 in there. But I fit into their small when the item is S, M or L. It's basically a lucky dip in there.

Sceptre86 · 30/12/2019 13:06

I never shop there for this exact reason. I find the same problem with their kids clothes. I have the same problem with dorothy perkins too. I am a size 12 on top and 14 on bottom. I bought two jumpers both sized small which were still huge.

Tableclothing · 30/12/2019 13:09

It's a mystery to me. They made a song and dance on their website a little while back about how they were standardising everything.

I ordered a top and leggings, both size M. The top is like a minidress, it's so massive. The leggings were too tight to get on. I swear I have very ordinary proportions.

AlmostAlwyn · 30/12/2019 13:14

Ugh. I got a pair of maternity jeans from there 3 years ago which were really comfortable. I'm pregnant again and got the same ones (apparently) and I can only just get them on! They feel quite restrictive (the jersey band is not as stretchy) and I feel like I won't be able to wear them for very much longer as my baby gets bigger! The size I had before was a 16 (I usually wear a 14 approximately), and these are supposed to be the same! I can't believe I'd be an 18 or bigger!

22Giraffes · 30/12/2019 13:15

I have size 20 trousers and a size 8 cardigan from there. I am neither of those sizes!

Branster · 30/12/2019 13:17

Yes they changed the sizing a while back but I still haven’t been able to figure out how exactly they did that.
I used to fit in their sizes 6&8 depending on the cut and fabric. Now it’s 4,6, 8 and sometimes even 10.
Their jeans have always been randomly sized.
However, there are lots of things I like in that shop and I usually order 2 or 3 sizes online and return what doesn’t fit. They sell out incredibly fast of some items (usually nice quality and style dresses) so have to be quick.

CFlemingSmith · 30/12/2019 13:21

I have a size 6 dress from there that fits me, but I’m a size 16 in their jeans!
I’m normally a size 8-10. I don’t buy from there anymore
