Dress Twins

DH & I are going to a black tie dinner for NYE. It’s a place we have been to for the past 8 years for NYE. Every year I rotate around my 3 suitable dresses for this event.

The place holds around 150 people and we are going with 22 other people (2 x tables of 12).

Tonight I was with some of the people who we will be with for NYE and I was describing the new dress I have bought for NYE to one of the ladies. Another of the ladies piped up that it sounded like her dress that she just bought. I bought mine today in the sale (still pricey at £150!) and was really chuffed with it. She showed me a picture of hers and it is indeed the same dress.

I am a size 18 and I am not very confident in how I look. She is a size 14 and looks great. I’m hoping we won’t look similar since we are different heights, sizes, hair colour and style etc. The dresses are plain blue so not an obvious pattern or anything.

AIBU to feel a bit gutted that we will have the same dress and she will most likely look better than me? AIBU to still wear it? We both just laughed but isn’t it a bit weird to know you’ll be wearing the same dress?

I still have the tags attached so I could return it but I already tried on loads of dresses and it was the only one I liked!

Should I still wear it?
NBU - wear it!
BU - don’t wear it

Wear it. Realistically, unless you only buy couture or bespoke clothing, there will always be a risk that someone will be wearing the same jumper / dress / coat.

Put a big statement necklace or pashmina with it- will look different. Most importantly, don’t stress Smile

notthemum · 29/12/2019 19:59

Can we see a pic of you in it ?

OwlinaTree · 29/12/2019 20:01

Wear it. The room will be dimly lit and everyone will be drunk. You will look lovely, that's all people will notice, not the fine details. Have a great night!

Fatted · 29/12/2019 20:01

I'd wear it.

If it's from a high street shop and recently been in the sale, then there might be a chance you're not the only two people wearing it.

Having your hair, make up and accessories different will make a difference.

NobJobWinker · 29/12/2019 20:02

I would be sorely tempted to return it and swap for a different dress (assuming the shop is reasonably local and you have a couple of hours spare at some point before the event)

TheGirlWhoLived · 29/12/2019 20:03

I personally wouldn’t wear it now you’ve pointed it out. If you were the slimmer of the two then you would feel more confident but a £150 dress should make you feel great, not second best (this is based on your own valuation of her being slimmer and therefore looking best, as an aside I am sure you would look equally wonderful from an objective point of view)

I would return and find something else, as much of a ballache as that is!

SeaSandandSun · 29/12/2019 20:03

It’s low cut so I was thinking of a big necklace or something. We’ll have different shoes - although it’s a long dress so it won’t make a huge difference!

My much younger/thinner sister in law and I wore the same dress to a big family event recently. We laughed it off, took lots of pics together, and then carried on not thinking again about what anyone else was wearing. Go for it!

ShirleyPhallus · 29/12/2019 20:08

Wear it, I’ve worn the same dress to an event as someone else before (damn Reiss and Coast everywhere!) and no one noticed at all

NewNameSameOldGame · 29/12/2019 20:14

I wouldn’t personally. I would return it and get another dress

PumpkinP · 29/12/2019 20:15

I Wouldn't wear it

Sodamncaughtinthemiddle · 29/12/2019 20:16

I'd maybe look for another dress.

CalleighDoodle · 29/12/2019 20:17

At one time i would have died a little inside. Now i wouldnt care id be like WE MATCH!!!

Wear it with confidence and

SeaSandandSun · 29/12/2019 20:19

It’s actually a very similar dress to the other dresses I already own. I don’t look great in dresses as my top and bottom are different sizes. This particular style sees to work for me. It makes me really reluctant to try and find something else.

I think I’ll brave it and try and find some bits and pieces to make it less obvious. I have some sparkly shoes I could wear rather than black. I’m hoping we can just laugh about it. After a few drinks I’m sure it will be funnier than I’m finding it now! I just hope nobody else turns up wearing it! Grin

I don’t live in the UK so I don’t know what sales are like there at the moment. I bought the dress in Debenhams. I would say 80% of the posh dress section is reduced. For some reason they always have a sale on that section a few days before NYE! There is a huge selection so hopefully no other dress twins!
