I've seen so much conflicting information but NHS website seems to say it's okay, but loads of people have told me not to eat smoked salmon! I could really eat it with some scrambled eggs and lemon, but will give it a miss if it's not safe!

Follow NHS guidelines. Ignore advice from anyone else or advice on other websites/apps. Literally everything you need is on the NHS website.

I always thought it was fine, I ate it in both my pregnancies.

Thank you! Yay! Going to treat myself, I've been avoiding it for six bloody months so I can't wait!

As above follow NHS; if you look too hard on the internet you’ll find everything is unsafe in pregnancy. I plan to have some at Christmas

moita · 22/12/2019 12:29

As Celebelly says smoked salmon is fine enjoy!

Unfortunately you'll get lots of helpful and often totally wrong bits Iof advice from everyone and their aunt when you're pregnant

Rachierach11 · 22/12/2019 12:31

Only read the nhs advice! Ignore any other websites when it comes to stuff like this. I ate more smoked salmon than I ever have before during my last pregnancy. It was all I thought about for the first 3 months Grin

usernamerisnotavailable · 22/12/2019 13:01

Ignore every other website except mumsnet 🙄

BoxedWine · 22/12/2019 13:13

NHS said it was fine so I did.

Do be aware as well that with a lot of foodstuffs, there is local variation and they're not always talking about the UK. So factor that into what you read: just because it's in English doesn't mean it pertains to British food standards. It may well be accurate information for those in the area where it was written but just not intended for you.

MinisterforCheekyFuckery · 22/12/2019 13:16

I ate it in both my pregnancies. If the NHS website says it's fine then that's good enough for me.

Winterwoollies · 22/12/2019 14:55

It’s absolutely fine and it wouldn’t be Christmas without it. I’ve had lots of it! You can also even have raw sushi as it is law in the UK that sushi-grade fish has to be frozen, and that’s what it needs to make it safe. So crack on and enjoy.

Expressedways · 22/12/2019 15:02

There’s a lot of stuff on random websites that is American and the advice is different there e.g. no runny eggs because they don’t routinely vaccinate against salmonella, salad is a risk because there are regular outbreaks of romaine poisoning, sushi isn’t required to be frozen first to kill bugs... etc.

If you live in the UK then follow the expert U.K. specific advice from the NHS and ignore anything else.

Likethebattle · 22/12/2019 15:49

The only danger is because it’s cured rather than cooked but it’s a tiny minuscule risk and at your stage of pregnancy a little bit won’t hurt.

nevermorelenore · 22/12/2019 16:26

Enjoy it! I got massive smoked salmon cravings while pregnant. Food safety laws are incredibly strict in this country, so the risk is very low. Smoked salmon has lots of vitamins, so it's good for you both.

greatballsofyarn · 22/12/2019 16:36

I remember as though it were yesterday the day I learned that smoked salmon was safe in pregnancy. I ate it from the packet with my hands and groaned with pleasure. Still the best food moment I've ever had.
