smelly food in cinema

Went to see Star Wars this morning. A woman sat right next to me just as the film was due to start. There was an entirely empty row of seats next to her and her friend but she sat next to me. Munching on smelly jalapenos covered in sauce for about an hour. AIBU to say this sort of food should not be sold in cinemas? It really stinks in a confined space

You’re unreasonable about the food - it’s a cinema - but annoying she sat next to you when there were empty seats around!

notangelinajolie · 21/12/2019 21:38

Couldn't agree more. By far the best cinema in my town is one of those trendy eating cinemas and last time we went the couple next to me were eating a full on meal. We could go to the normal cinema down the road but the seats are so bloody uncomfortable and it's usually packed with annoying teens. We can't win either way - we have decided comfy sofas win even if the place stinks to high heaven.

ClemDanFango · 21/12/2019 21:40

How the fuck did it take her an hour to eat a snack?

Hahaha88 · 21/12/2019 21:42

@notangelinajolie are you really complaining that people are eating in a cinema designed as an eatery??

Sparklesocks · 21/12/2019 21:44

I agree it’s anti social. Was once in a cinema where someone took a Chinese takeaway in and it was really distracting because the smell was so strong.

bluesteakandcheese · 21/12/2019 21:56

Nothing is more annoying in a cinema than people who insist on using their phones with their screen on full brightness. Fucking boils my blood. May or may not have dobbed a few teenagers in to Cineworld staff over the years...

Emptybox · 21/12/2019 23:46

I got kicked out for taking my own food in once. I told them that a) their food prices were too high, and,
b) it was too wet to have the barbecue outside.

Emptybox · 21/12/2019 23:49

However, you’re not being unreasonable at all. Not with the food or the phones. The cinema isn’t cheap any more. If I go to see a film, I want to experience it. I don’t want the stench of food or the sound of beeping phones.
Is it good, by the way, OP? I haven’t seen it yet- very excited!

SlightlyStaleCocoPops · 21/12/2019 23:51

Must eat awfully slow if it took an hour 😂

alibongo5 · 21/12/2019 23:57

I go to my local independent cinema which doesn't sell hot food but does sell wine and beer to take in to the film which suits me just fine!

Oh and they decant snacks from rustly packets to bowls.

Emptybox · 22/12/2019 00:15

Alibongo, that’s why independent cinemas should be preserved.

WotchaTalkinBoutWillis · 22/12/2019 00:47

Food smells don't bother me.
People who keep looking at their phones at the cinema get me proper boiling though.

Rumboogie · 22/12/2019 01:29

Couldn't agree more. Also, we recently went to a concert where the couple next to us brought in full sized pizzas and scoffed them throughout the performance. Nearly made me throw up. Fortunately there were some vacant seats a little way off. I told them what I thought of their lack of consideration and moved.

SheChoseDown · 22/12/2019 01:32

You could have moved too?

Botherfreedays · 22/12/2019 01:50

YANBU. Last time I went to the cinema it was full of people eating every good imaginable. I ranted all the way home that it was no wonder they were all overweight, that the nation is overweight etc.

Silverflake · 22/12/2019 06:57

It doesn’t take an hour to eat nachos, and you can’t blame people for eating food that’s sold there. At least there was space to move if you wanted to.

WatchingTheMoon · 22/12/2019 06:59

I live in Korea and people eat fried squid in the cinema here, give me nachos any day.

Silverflake · 22/12/2019 07:02

@Botherfreedays

Ranting all the way home about how fat everyone is sounds a bit unhinged and very irritating

emmathedilemma · 22/12/2019 07:03

I'm with you, why do people have to stuff their faces with stinky crap food because they're watching a film?

lovepickledlimes · 22/12/2019 07:21

YABVU and sound as annoying as the old ladies that glared at me for daring to have the pop corn that was sold at the cinema. Certain foods are part of the package deal when going to the cinema. If you don't like the smell of popcorn or nachos buy your own cinema or watch it at home.

Only line I would draw is hot foods from outside the cinema. I did once have a lady and her daughter bring in a pepperoni pizza from outside when I went to see a ballet. Was less then impressed

BusySittingDown · 22/12/2019 07:26

If you get so annoyed by people being people maybe you should wait for the DVD in future.

Aroundnabout1 · 22/12/2019 07:36

Why did you not move?

Cornettoninja · 22/12/2019 08:31

Ah I love fluorescent cinema nachos Grin

Sorry OP, but as they’re sold there YABU. It’s something you should expect to come across tbh.

I really want cinema nachos now... I don’t think I’ve been to the cinema since 2014!

LouisaJenny · 22/12/2019 09:41

EmptyBox 😂
