To suggest that Rachel and Ross weren't actually together much?

Looking back on the show, they always seemed off and on / off and on.

Yet I'm 're watching them all they just actually arent a couple for very long.

They kiss s2 ep7, they don't start dating til s2 ep14. They go on a break s3 ep15.

They then get back together for 24 hours after the beach house (s3 ep24 and s4 ep1).

He says her name S4 ep24. No romance.

They drunken marry in Vegas S5 ep24. No romance.

They sleep together once roughly 6 weeks before Monica and Chandler marry.

They sleep together once before she leaves for Paris.

AIBU to suggest it wasn't the great love affair we, looking back, think it is?

I think it was just male wish fulfilment. Real-life Ross would have been like Gunther, adoring Rachel from afar. And she would have married a rich guy.

FruityWidow · 19/12/2019 20:51

Neither were Daphne and Niles in Fraiser but they still managed to drag it out for over a dozen seasons.

ElspethFlashman · 19/12/2019 20:53

The big shock was at the end when someone tells Ross it's been 6 years and he should move on. And he's like "It's been 6 years??!"

And I thought fuck me they haven't been together in 6 years and we're meant to still care??

Feelingstupid123456789101112 · 19/12/2019 20:53

I think the point is that they keep coming back together ‘it’s never off the table’. I’m currently subjected to non stop Friends because my daughter is obsessed and I think the same, they aren’t actually together for that much of the show.

Bluerussian · 19/12/2019 20:54

Who are they?

dayswithaY · 19/12/2019 20:55

I never bought them as a couple, she would never waste her time with him.

TheHumansAreDefinitelyDead · 19/12/2019 20:56

Agree OP, I was think ng this exact thought today (am rewatching Friend 1 episode a day Grin in my lunch break)

Not a great love story after all

But when I first watched it in the 90s, and binge watching did not yet exist, their getting together (season 2?) was somehow so real and relatable

Now, as a middle aged woman, I don't think they were "meant to be" Grin

Chandler and Monica are the real thing though Smile

OvalCanvas · 19/12/2019 20:57

Rachel could've done better , Ross is so selfish and whiny. There is no situation that he didn't try to make about him.

WotchaTalkinBoutWillis · 19/12/2019 20:58

I've voted YANBU as they weren't really together that much really.
I mean, he fancied her and mooned after her for 9 years, then they got together, for about a season and that's it.

"I think the point is that they keep coming back together ‘it’s never off the table’"

Oh and also this, he's her lobster Grin

WireBrushAndDettolMaam · 19/12/2019 20:59

Exactly what charlotte said. They were very briefly together.

The only reason they got together was because Rachel found out Ross was “in love” with her (red flag No1. right there Rachel!) she had absolutely zero interest in Ross until she heard that. And she’d known him for years so plenty of time to develop an attraction if there was one, there wasn’t! Why did would finding that out change anything?

And their relationship was awful. Ross was awful to her. That list?? (Red flag No2! You should have listened to your gut!) the jealousy of her job and mark. Humiliating her at work.

They should never have been a couple.

12345FishAlive · 19/12/2019 21:01

Ross and Rachel really annoy me. Their whole relationship was the most dragged out stupid storyline ever. IMO Monica and Chandler were the best Friends couple

WireBrushAndDettolMaam · 19/12/2019 21:03

And when Ross turned up at the coffee house telling Rachel she had no right to ever tell him she had feelings for him and that she should’ve told him before he met julie. He knew she only found out about his feelings while he was on his way to China! What a ridiculous man he was.

inthekitchensink · 19/12/2019 21:03

One year they dated, and 6 years later they are still fannying about because they are tied into the same social group. I can safely say I wouldn’t have a thing to say to someone I dated 6 years ago, that’s why we go no contact, people

WotchaTalkinBoutWillis · 19/12/2019 21:11

IMO Monica and Chandler were the best Friends couple

Monica and Chandler were a great couple, think they were meant to be together from the start...
remember when they were at the hospital waiting for Ben to be born (think it was Ben's birth?) in the first series, Monica said she wanted a baby and to marry.... Chandler said if neither of them were married by the time they were 40 they should get together.....
Monica.... "Why would I not be married by the time I reach 40? Is there something fundamentally unmarriable about me?!"
Then at the beach in series 4 where Chandler asks if she'd consider him if he was the last person on earth.... Monica.... "meh" lol
Now totally aware I probably watch Friends far too much haha

goodwinter · 19/12/2019 21:13

I mean don't forget they also lived together with their child for a while!

But yes, they're not together THAT long.

marchingonwithmother · 19/12/2019 21:16

@Bluerussian you'd be shocking in a pub quiz. Do you live just to come on threads pretending you've never heard of things 🤷🏽‍♀️ why? Confused

Ross and Rachel "who are they?"

Christmas Eve boxes "what are they"

Elf on a shelf "what is that"

Palegreenstars · 19/12/2019 21:16

The thing I hate the most is in the final episodes there is a lot of focus on Rachel’s career, getting fired and moving to Paris. However, as soon as gets off the plane that story line doesn’t matter any more because as women know once you’ve got your man who cares about your career.

OrangeSlices998 · 19/12/2019 21:19

They also kissed the night Monica & Chandler got engaged (missed point of thread)

I hate Ross. Rachel could do better!

WotchaTalkinBoutWillis · 19/12/2019 21:21

Who are they?

Hmm Grin

Honeyroar · 19/12/2019 21:24

They were v briefly together but half of the whole length of the series was about them fannying about not getting together or admitting that they liked each other. They were bloody tedious really, I don’t know why we all wanted them to be together!! And I agree, Ross was an annoying whiney, clingy crap boyfriend- nobody would put up with him. She used to talk to him like a child calling him sweetie in a calming way.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 19/12/2019 21:25

WotchaTalkinBoutWillis

And that episode Monica bumped Ben's head "Monica bang".....maybe he was saying "Monica Bing"

To be fair, Rachel was just as bad (ok, she didn't sleep with anyone when they were on a break I'll give her that lol)

Ross

  • made the list (even though that was Chandlers fault) didn;t have to go along with it
  • insanely jealous about Mark (even though Rachel has given her no reason to be)
- sent a barber shop quartet and picnic basket to her work, tagged along to her fashion show thing, and basically was a paranoid knob - hid the guy's phone number from the bar so she couldn't contact him even though her and Ross weren't together

Rachel

  • told Bonnie that Ross had a thing for bald women so got her to shave her head
  • sabotaged Julie's haircut too

OK, Ross is the biggest knob still but Rachel has her moments too lol

WireBrushAndDettolMaam · 19/12/2019 21:36

Agree Monica and Chandler was written in the stars! Grin

WotchaTalkinBoutWillis · 19/12/2019 21:40

Ooh yes, forgot about that! Shock Good point
