To ask for help with my electricity meter

Hi,

I need a gas and electric meter to give to company. New house and have NO idea how to read or where the meters are. Is this the electric meter?

Have a look in the cupboards, under the stairs etc, the gas meter may be outside. Maybe ask your neighbours where theirs are. Post pics if you're unable to read them but it's just a case usually of reading the numbers off the screen. If the meters have a number pad you may need to press the number 9 or if you have electric storage heaters you'd have to press the blue button in and out though the whole cycle. Your supplier will know what meter is what if you give them the serial numbers off the meter box.

Cupboard on wall outside, near front door? Often has a plastic panel door and uses a triangular key.

@LIZS thanks there's a white box with a triangular lock outside. Now to find the key....

If you can't find the key a pair of flat handled teaspoons might do the trick

When you do find a key, take a picture with your phone of the reading. Keep it until after your first bill arrives. Saves any disputes with energy providers.

Sounds as if you've found one
Ask a neighbour about the other, and they may have a key you can borrow for the one you've found.
Failing that, call the supply company - meter readers always know where they are, so presumably that info is held on a database.

Do you have a landlord? Normally they show you where things like this are and leave keys etc.

We've had electricity meters under the stairs, in the cellar and up above our kitchen cupboards in the past. Gas meter has always been outside (but you've found that by the sounds of it).

I totally agree with PP - take photos of both. Once we couldn't read a meter as we'd not had one like I before. A cust service rep let us email a photo over and they deciphered it for us.

You can buy replacement keys at Robert Dyas, Wilko etc as they are universal. Or use narrow pliers to turn it. Short-term ask a neighbour to borrow one.

Look on your energy supplier website for instructions on how to read a meter.

Last thread I saw on here asking for similar help, half the answers were wrong, including from a poster who said that she worked for an energy company Hmm.
