school toilets

Every day the DCs come home and dash to the toilet because they won't or can't go at school. Three areas of the school with toilets are locked/out of bounds at breaks and lunch because there are no staff in those areas, another has 'manky' toilets and the other is where the kids who vape go to vape.

WIBU to email the school and ask them to address this?

Have you posted about this before, UT seems awfully familiar?

KellyHall · 18/12/2019 16:31

I never used the toilets at school, they were disgusting. I think it gave me a strong bladder!

chillykiwi · 18/12/2019 16:33

No it's not something I've posted about before. I expect that there is more than one school in the country with 'manky' toilets.

It's what I did years ago - not the vaping but two toilets were out of bounds due to smoking!

The ones not locked are likely to be manky as they are overused.

School toilets are rank - I work in a school and some of the stuff kids do it grim. Panninis down the loo a regular occurrence!

Noideawhatusername · 18/12/2019 16:56

Children are allowed to vape on the school premises? Is that common?

chillykiwi · 18/12/2019 17:02

Of course they aren't allowed to!

I never used to use the school toilets and this was 20 years ago!

maddy68 · 18/12/2019 17:10

What do you expect them to do? They should go to the toilet in their breaks. They can't magic staff out of thin air in case a child can't regulate the hensekces

Snaga · 18/12/2019 17:10

My daughter's secondary school addressed this by making all toilets open plan to the corridor. Girls one side, boys the other, wall to floor cubicles and sinks in the middle.

No more toilet bulling or loitering because the whole thing is open to the corridor.

I'm still undecided on the whole thing because it offers girls no privacy to clean up if dealing with a messy period but the school can show figures that prove bullying and incidents of smoking/vaping related punishments went down significantly.

Just a heads up that this might be a direction your child's school takes.

Crochetymum · 18/12/2019 17:16

My son won't go at school , he says all then year 11s stand listening to take the Mick Iif he has a poo! So when he walks home he shoots straight into his Grandma's down the road because he's so desperate.

@maddy68 not sure what hensekces is?

They can't go to the toilet in their breaks, that's the point - 3 sets are closed, 1 is dirty and 1 is used by the kids who vape. It's nothing to do with not being able to regulate themselves

This is not a new problem. At junior school, I used to nip home at lunchtime, unknown to working parents, also making a cup of tea while I was about it. The toilet blocks were outside, open to the sky, and had no locks. One little horror used to run through banging the doors open; I hated it. Finally rumbled when I was late for afternoon registration; I wasn't supposed to leave the premises at lunchtime. Security was slacker in those days.
At my naice girls' grammar school,, I learned to last all day as the toilets were not pleasant. I have a lifelong problem with remembering to drink enough water, as I trained myself not to fill up, so to speak.
The "open plan" sounds like a good idea.

Arnoldthecat · 18/12/2019 17:36

Is this a school or a borstal?

Finfintytint · 18/12/2019 17:40

My son’s school had dreadful toilets apparently. He’d sneak out to use the loo at home (5 mins away) or just hold until home time.
No hot water, no soap, no toilet roll, broken locks - pretty grim.

EL8888 · 18/12/2019 17:43

Sounds very unreasonable to me?! Surely they cant infringe such a basic human right?

Sugarpea123 · 18/12/2019 17:46

There is no excuse for inadequate toilet facilities. It's a basic human right. Yes I would get in touch.

AwakeAmbs · 18/12/2019 17:52

This is all really sad :( makes me glad mine are home educated.

maddy68 · 18/12/2019 18:15

There will be adequate toilets to use that are supervised, unfortunately schools don't have enough staff to supervise them all these data

EleanorLavish · 18/12/2019 18:22

One of my DC has ulcerative colitis and this is an issue. The toilets in school are disgusting apparently. A staff member told me they are cleaned thoroughly every day, but the kids are just really dirty/ disgusting. Lots of food about...
The school nurse has told me to tell them that there is one by her office, which is a single and rarely used.
Kids need space to go to the loo, I would be miserable if I had this at work each day.

Weird

chillykiwi · 18/12/2019 20:21

@Snaga that sounds like it'd be a good system apart from the problem you mention. I think it would mean that other children would still avoid the toilets but would be a step in the right direction.

I do supply teaching. Unless there is a note about a medical problem I do expect them to go at break and lunch dependant on age. I was once reprimanded for letting a girl go so ks2 and upper I just say no now.

chillykiwi · 18/12/2019 20:30

It's not an issue with going in lesson time, it's that they won't go at all because of the state of the toilets with only two sets open and one set being used by the kids who want to try and vape in secret.
