For everyone voting labour, how do you feel about the anti semitism associated with them?

Genuine question, not being goady.

I’ve always voted labour and would hate for tories to be re elected tomorrow. But the casual normalisation of anti Semitism scares me. I don’t want to vote someone into power who isn’t prepared to stand up for all ethnic minorities.

A lot of my left wing friends/colleagues seem to not see it as an issue, or think that as there’s more problems with racism from conservatives they are the less worse option.

U: labour supporter still voting labour
NU: labour supporter choosing alternative party

I don't see it as being a purely labour issue - there are antisemites in the other political parties too. It strikes me as something that the Tories like to fan the flames of in the media to generate bad press for their opponents.

Obviously I'd prefer to vote for a party with zero anti Semitic history, but people are suffering under the Tories so my first priority is to get them out. Hope that helps Smile

KnitFastDieWarm · 11/12/2019 18:31

The antisemitism in labour is vile and needs dealing with. It turns my stomach.
BUT
I’m more confident that the current leadership of labour can be ‘managed’ and I’m less scared of them than I am of another five years of the current cabinet (and what they will do to the NHS in particular)

FaFoutis · 11/12/2019 18:33

There are many more problems with the conservatives.

Tellmetruth4 · 11/12/2019 18:34

Who are you voting for OP?

leafyygreens · 11/12/2019 18:36

Lib Dems I think, but finding it difficult to come to a decision! I’m not Jewish but it has really struck a nerve with me

This is the second "I'm a life long labour supporter who doesn't like x,y and z about labour" I've seen today.

Just admit you're a Tory 😂

YouTheCat · 11/12/2019 18:38

What about islamophobic comments from the PM? I'd find that much more worrying.

Tellmetruth4 · 11/12/2019 18:38

A decision between Lib Dem’s and which other party OP?

leafyygreens · 11/12/2019 18:41

I’m struggling to decide between Lib Dem’s and Labour (hence the post)

The lifelong Labour voter shtick is getting rather tired to be honest....you really aren’t going to influence anyone to change vote due to anti-semitism claims at this late stage. Everything but the kitchen sink has already been thrown at Labour so this will not be a new revelation to turn anybody.

Popc0rn · 11/12/2019 18:42

"But the casual normalisation of anti Semitism scares me."

How have Labour done this? Genuine question.

leafyygreens · 11/12/2019 18:43

@YouTheCat but why is that more worrying than anti semitism?

I don’t want to support anyone with racist views!

OP posts:
rhubarbcrumbles · 11/12/2019 18:43

It's not just a Labour issue, there is anti-semitism, racism and other discrimination in all political parties - if I wanted to vote for a party which didn't discrimate against anybody then I'd never vote.

noideaatallreally · 11/12/2019 18:43

Islamophobia in the Tory party worries me more.

ThinkIamflyingundertheradar · 11/12/2019 18:44

It worried me too so I was very glad when Philip Scofield managed to force an apology of sorts out of JC.. I have a postal vote and after hearing him express some regret I felt better about putting my cross in the Labour box. It’s posted now so that’s that until the next election -which might be next Spring!

I agree that there are probably just as many anti semites in the Tory party and that racism generally is more prevalent there and very openly comes from the top down. I still haven’t forgotten BJ’s burka/letterbox remark.

leafyygreens · 11/12/2019 18:44

Thank you for the genuine replies to this.

I wish people wouldn’t troll hunt or accuse, I was genuinely asking, and am genuinely undecided between parties

I wish it was possible to debate it without the hostility

OP posts:
Rainbowhairdontcare · 11/12/2019 18:45

I'm Jewish and I'll vote Labour because I hate Boris more than Corbyn and the LibDems don't have a chance here

Ylfa · 11/12/2019 18:45

Just a thank you for starting this thread. It seemed like nobody gives a fuck!

MrsMaiselsMuff · 11/12/2019 18:46

I don't think it has been normalised, it's that there's a lot of frustration at how big a very small number of complaints has been blown up. One complaint is one too many and completely unacceptable, but when the media depicts the whole party as anti semitic it gets people's backs up. It's natural to push back when accused of something completely untrue.

If you look at research, anti semitism is far more prevalent amongst those with right wing views than those on the left. But all sense has gone out the window on this issue, and as mentioned above, the Tories are allowed to get away with Islamophobia and anti semitism, with barely a mention on the news.

noideaatallreally · 11/12/2019 18:46

and as to why - because there it is just passed off as well it's Boris, just being Boris. But it isn't! It's seen as being ok for other people to make equally ill informed 'jokes'.

VanyaHargreeves · 11/12/2019 18:48

I feel sick about it I really do.

But no other party adequately represents my interests

Tories not much better when it comes to minority prejudice themselves.

aSofaNearYou · 11/12/2019 18:50

I don't feel like Labour is who you need to worry about when it comes to standing up for minorities.

Cyberworrier · 11/12/2019 18:50

I am deeply troubled by it and gave up my membership partly because of the poor handling of this issue in the party. However, my priority is to get the Tories, incumbent for ten years presiding over austerity Britain and the Brexit shit show, OUT.
It is also a tactical vote for a second referendum.

I do believe there is anti semitism within both parties, alongside a deep problem with Islamophobia in the Tories. I think JC has been an apologist for AS and distrust him for that, but also am certain he is a lesser evil than BJ, the homophobic, misogynistic, classist racist.

Ideally, we would have a hung parliament where SNP, Lib Dems and Greens would have influence over Labour.

MrsMaiselsMuff · 11/12/2019 18:50

And when I say a small number, I mean in relation to the size of the membership. When you have half a million members you're going to get some bad eggs. It did take too long for the complaints procedure to address these, and I hope that the worst have been removed from the party now. If anyone does see or experience anti semitic comments in future, please do report them, that's the only way they can be acted upon.

Notmyideamovingon · 11/12/2019 18:52

If being anti Israel is being an anti semite then I am one.
