For everyone voting labour, how do you feel about the anti semitism associated with them?

Genuine question, not being goady.

I’ve always voted labour and would hate for tories to be re elected tomorrow. But the casual normalisation of anti Semitism scares me. I don’t want to vote someone into power who isn’t prepared to stand up for all ethnic minorities.

A lot of my left wing friends/colleagues seem to not see it as an issue, or think that as there’s more problems with racism from conservatives they are the less worse option.

U: labour supporter still voting labour
NU: labour supporter choosing alternative party

Do people really think that the EHRC threshold for investigation was met by submissions of rumours, smears and Daily Mail headlines?

No one was fanning the flames of the media when a racist was heckling a Jewish Labour MP. JC stood there silent.
And after the talk Jeremy walked off chatting to this guy like he was a good friend.

scrambledeggs01 · 11/12/2019 22:07

I care about the NHS too much to not vote labour.

Also conservatives have a terrible history so would never ever vote for them

Tanith · 11/12/2019 22:10

“I can't resist pointing out that the only Jewish (by birth) prime minister we've ever had was a conservative.”

I don’t see your point.
The Conservative party is by far the oldest, founded in 1834. Labour was not founded until 1900 and the Liberal Democrats in 1984, though the Liberal party dated back to the 1850s.
The Conservatives have also been the longest overall in power by quite a considerable margin. Really, that they only managed one Jewish MP in all that time is nothing to be proud of.

Disraeli was baptised a Christian at the age of 12. He couldn’t have been an MP, much less PM, otherwise: Jews were prohibited from becoming MPs at that time.

catsarecute · 11/12/2019 22:11

Clearly the anti-semitism is an issue and needs to be addressed (I sincerely hope they will address it). I think some of the issue is actually anti-zionism though which is a different problem. However I have also seen reports of anti-semitism in the Conservative party (as well as numerous other reports of racism/Islamophobia/disablism etc), and I do agree with the poster who said that the Conservatives have weaponised anti-semitism as part of their campaign against Labour.

I am voting tactically for Labour as the alternative does not bear thinking about. If I was voting my first choice, it would be green, but there is no point, so Labour it is.

I am having sleepless nights and have been in tears today at the thought of a Johnson led government continuing after Friday. I think that if we get Johnson out, other things can be dealt with later. If we get a hung parliament we might even be able to get PR as well.

If anyone is still undecided and wants to vote tactically against the Tories this website is good www.votesmart2019.com/

Oliversmumsarmy · 11/12/2019 22:16

All those of you who state they are Jewish and voting Labour I cannot square it with what I see around me.

I am from a very Jewish area.

Not only do I not know anyone who is voting Labour but the streets are a sea of Blue posters.

dontmesswiththeGC · 11/12/2019 22:17

The Jewish community in this country are genuinely scared of a Corbyn government. I should know, I'm part of the community and my social media feed is just post after post of people
Of all different ages and background expressing their fear and frustrations at non-Jews telling Jews what is and what isn't antisemitism. If you're interested to learn more and read a non-emotional article on the subject read this. It's very long but gives a comprehensive background of anti semitism and as well as more info on Zionism and anti-Zionism. If you don't have time to read it all you can skip to about halfway to read more about the current Labour Party. I hope this helps people to understand that this isn't just 'there's anti semitism everywhere' there's is a serious and institutionalised problem within the current Labour Party that is lead by Jeremy Corbyn.

Muslims are people that follow a religion called Islam.

Muslims are not a race.

Oliversmumsarmy · 11/12/2019 22:21

I agree.

Most of my friends have their escape plan ready to put into place come Friday.

They all have very portable businesses and homes in other countries.

SylvanianFrenemies · 11/12/2019 22:23

That medium.com gives a great overview. But the stuff on Zionism is ridiculously unbalanced. No exploration of the horrific treatment of ordinary Palestinians. Not in my name, thanks.

Mammajay · 11/12/2019 22:26

I was shocked to hear some labour activists singing yesyerday at some Jewish protestors For the many, not the Jew. I am not Jewish but I also watched the TV documentary about the young labour party workers who had to resign after whistle blowing about how the labour party were handling complaints of anti Semitism. I will vote lib dem

SylvanianFrenemies · 11/12/2019 22:26

Btw I am not if course saying that Israel's behaviour justifies antisemitism. But if you are going to give a timeline, make it accurate.

dontmesswiththeGC · 11/12/2019 22:28

@SylvanianFrenemies The medium article isn't about whether the Israeli government's actions have been right or wrong. You've missed the point entirely. There is a difference between criticising the actions of the government and saying Israel doesn't have a right to exist. The article is explaining Israel's existence. If you don't believe in its right to existence then as per the article that is an anti-Semitic belief.

SJaneS48 · 11/12/2019 22:29

@dontmesswiththeGC out of interest how do you feel about the 3 Tory MPs currently under investigation for antisemitism and the fact Boris Johnson hasn’t spoken up about this?

I do understand the concerns of the community. Jewish friends of mine are clearly feeling very let down and angry. And there is cause & apologies have been half hearted and too late. My father (who is Jewish) has been very upset and emotional about me canvassing for Labour over the last couple of weeks. I get why but honestly, anti semitism is as rooted within the Tory party, let us not forget this. I don’t like Corbyn, he isn’t the leader I would want but my support is to the party and the difference we can make to a Britain in a very sorry state. If you don’t like something, be a part of changing it.

rosiejaune · 11/12/2019 22:31

I am Jewish. Green at heart but will be voting Labour tomorrow.

There is racism of all kinds everywhere in society, because it is systemic. Most of it is subtle and subconscious, not overt; everyone on this thread is prejudiced in some way whether they will admit it or not.

Labour are far more likely to address the root causes of inequality than the Tories or the Lib Dems.

So never mind individual manifestations of anti-semitism; they aren't the real issue.

Not that all of them are genuine anyway; some of them are conflating criticism of Israel with racism. And the Tories have plenty more individual examples of racism by their MPs.

ivykaty44 · 11/12/2019 22:31

Thank you dontmesswith for posting this explination

SylvanianFrenemies · 11/12/2019 22:35

I'm not antisemitic. I'm jewish. I believe in Israel. But I don't believe in Israel shitting all over Palestinians and breaking international law.

I can see we have different views and there's no need to debate them here. But let's not trot out the old self-hating jew tropes. Because they are a touch antisemitic too.

doublebarrellednurse · 11/12/2019 22:36

Sits next to @SylvanianFrenemies

Copperblack · 11/12/2019 22:36

I am active in my local party and can honestly say I have seen no anti-semitism from my comrades. We are passionate about equality. However I have seen anti-semitism online in left wing forums, which has not always been dealt with. I know someone who worked on anti Semitic complaints, and a major issue was that so many of the anti-semitists are not Labour members, just supporters. We still have to take some responsibility though.

I left Labour over Iraq. When I rejoined I realised that leaving was the worst thing to do. You can only influence from within. I’ve tried to be really supportive of my Jewish comrades ( who are diverse ) and led a campaign to alter meeting nights from Friday to Thursday to enable more to attend for instance.

There is so much at stake. No-one wins if the Tories win in my opinion. That’s not minimising anti-semitism, I just don’t see that abandoning Labour will end anti Semitic, and it will cause far more hardship too.

BillywigSting · 11/12/2019 22:37

It worries me but not as much as another five years of tory brutality worries me.

7dayslater · 11/12/2019 22:40

I don't think being anti zionism is anti-semitism.

The Tories worry me far more.

Oly4 · 11/12/2019 22:43

It concerns me but it’s difficult to separate media construct from facts. It also worries me less than the stories dismantling education, the NHS and lining their own pockets while the poor get poorer

Oly4 · 11/12/2019 22:43

To toes not stories!
