For everyone voting labour, how do you feel about the anti semitism associated with them?

Genuine question, not being goady.

I’ve always voted labour and would hate for tories to be re elected tomorrow. But the casual normalisation of anti Semitism scares me. I don’t want to vote someone into power who isn’t prepared to stand up for all ethnic minorities.

A lot of my left wing friends/colleagues seem to not see it as an issue, or think that as there’s more problems with racism from conservatives they are the less worse option.

U: labour supporter still voting labour
NU: labour supporter choosing alternative party

If it’s racism that is stopping you voting labour then the conservatives have just a grim a record as they do

They’re not the only two options...

TooManyHeadaches · 12/12/2019 00:02

there are powerful people who are scared of Israel being criticised

Halleli - why is this an anti-Semitic thing to say? I think Israel should be criticised over it's illegal.occupation of palestian territories. That does not make.me anti-Semitic. There is a huge problem in love making the two and posts like yours illustrate the point I was trying to make.

JanesKettle · 12/12/2019 00:02

Not trusting Jewish people to be communicating honestly about their experience with anti-Semitism and Labour and insisting that they are 'part of a bigger political picture' ie secretly shilling for Tories, is based on anti-Semitic tropes.

So many people, who can presumably recognise when they are being racist to people of color, or Islamophobic to Muslims, simply cannot see how their own arguments rest of a base of anti-Semitic tropes.

TooManyHeadaches · 12/12/2019 00:04

Not 'love making' - not sure where that came from! Meant to say 'equating'

Peregrina · 12/12/2019 00:11

I am not voting Labour, but I would if I lived in a seat where they had a good chance of winning. Some anti-semites in the party are as nothing compared with the racist xenophobes in the Tory party who are both anti-semitic and anti - Islam.

Why is nothing being said about Boris calling all Muslim women..."letterboxes" or something like that . I am shocked that the public have forgotten how vile is words have been towards Muslim women

Chocpear · 12/12/2019 00:25

From what I can gather Labour were far too slow in dealing with their processes in expelling members who posted vile anti Semitic comments online and at some meetings. Labour say they are improving their processes to expel such members and it is right that is closely followed and they continue to be held to account if they are not. I would hope we can fight for progressive policies and strongly call out anti Semitism and racism when it appears as sadly it still does. Re Corbyn on this, I thought this comment by someone seemed fair though that is for each person to decide: ‘what I see are the actions of a lifelong anti-racist and supporter of the Palestinian cause who is sometimes less careful than he should be when pursuing the causes he supports, and is not nearly critical enough of people who he believes are on the side of the poor and oppressed.’ He should not have shared a platform with terrorists from Hamas for example.

Finally, this video by a Jewish journalist who believes Labour were too slow to expel members (a small group relatively out of a 500,000 membership - but of course even one is not acceptable) making anti semite comments but still will vote Labour may be of interest to you. mobile.twitter.com/MikeSegalov/status/1204701272760299520

I appreciate British Jews don’t speak as one voice and they have varied opinions generally and on this v important issue so this journalist is just sharing his view and others will not agree.

StarbucksSmarterSister · 12/12/2019 00:30

I agree with Peter Oborne as quoted by Cochineal.

When even Jewish people can't agree on whether or not Corbyn personally is antisemitic no wonder some of us don't know what to think. There is no doubt it exists in the party and I think Corbyn has not dealt with it effectively. His reasons are open to speculation.

I have given him the benefit of the doubt (which has led to me being accused on MN of being an apologist for anti Semitism). Others have not.

But I am still voting Labour in this election because I think this hard right manifestation of the Tories will be disastrous. The more I see of Johnson the better Corbyn actually looks and my opinion of him has improved although I'd much prefer Starmer as leader. I think there is no question the Tory party also has an anti Semite problem as well as an Islamophobia one.

Of course something needs to be done and I believe such people should be booted out. If Corbyn is shown to be guilty he should go (and likewise Johnson who has proven himself to hold pretty vile views).

Unfortunately all forms of bigotry exist in general society and are more out in the open since 2016. It is a major problem but I'm not sure how to tackle it since it's patently not just a question of education as some of the most bigoted people in politics are supposedly among the best educated.

Thanks to everyone who has provided links. I will be reading them all.

StarbucksSmarterSister · 12/12/2019 00:52

There were two attempted genocides of Jewish people in the 20th century alone (I had family murdered in both) and most people have never even heard of one of them.

joyfullittlehippo

Can you link to some information about the second one? Thanks.

I am, obviously, very sorry about your family.

VashtaNerada · 12/12/2019 01:22

Another one here who’s Jewish and voting Labour, plenty of us are. Their manifesto is clearly the strongest IMO and I’m satisfied with how they’re dealing with anti-semitism.

leafyygreens · 12/12/2019 09:21

@Halleli

If it’s racism that is stopping you voting labour then the conservatives have just a grim a record as they do

They’re not the only two options...

Exactly.

What I am trying to say is that no one is denying BJ is worse. If you’re not a white middle class cis male then he’s prejudiced against you.

But that doesn’t automatically mean labour don’t have issues with anti semitism that are tolerated by JC

Oliversmumsarmy · 12/12/2019 11:45

I am not saying posters are lying but I live in a very Jewish area.

In previous elections it was a mixed bag of Conservative, Labour and Liberal posters you would see and my friends were the same.
Now it is a sea of blue posters.
I have a lot of Jewish friends and I know no one in rl who is Jewish and is voting Labour

My friends all have their “escape plan” in place if Labour get in.

SylvanianFrenemies · 12/12/2019 12:49

"I'm not saying posters are lying". No, you are just implying it. It might shock you to hear that Jewish people aren't a homogenous group. There are different views and political approaches in the community.

Bear2014 · 12/12/2019 12:53

Not ideal but it's a very small minority of the party. Most of their MPs are good people, in stark contrast to the Tories. The Tory party have also been anti-semitic, as well as islamaphobic, generally racist, homophobic, classist and dishonest. A labour government is by far the best choice for the country.

SirChing · 12/12/2019 13:17

I do think there is anti-Semitism in the Labour Party. Largely because there is anti-Semitism across the UK, therefore some of the Labour membership are bound to be anti-Semites.

I do think Corbyn has been shit at addressing the issue within the party, and he shouldn't have denied the experiences of those Jewish MPs who complained.

Having said all that, I am under no illusions that there are an equal number of Anti-Semites, Islamophobes and Homophobes in the Torys. Our PM described gay men as being "tank top wearing bum boys".

The Tories really are the epitome of "they arent prejudiced, they just hate everybody (that isn't a white, Christian, middle class male).

The Jewish people in my family are voting Labour, as am I. Because they know that at a national level, a Tory government is horrendous for everybody. They also know that most people in this country, including Labour voters, abhor anti-Semitism.

Wafflecopter · 12/12/2019 13:38

If it’s not anti Semitic shite from labour it’s sexist, racist, classist shite from the conservatives. All need to be stopped but I’ll go with the one with fewer flaws.
The PM’s father pretty much calling the general public illiterate morons, people in his party trying to say disabled people should be paid less as they’re basically too stupid to understand money, single mothers are tarts... the list goes on.

I’ll vote Lib Dem and hope for a coalition.

Damntheman · 12/12/2019 13:54

This is not a labour only issue, so my vote remains with Labour. But that said, it is an extremely serious problem that needs extremely serious investigation and extremely serious tactics to deal with it.

fivesecondrule · 12/12/2019 14:37

There's a video on twitter that has been posted by Israel Advocacy Movement that makes quite unpleasant viewing.

Halleli · 12/12/2019 14:47

The experience of a British Jew voting today:

One British Jewish friend reports turning up to vote, giving his (Jewish-sounding name), then hearing polling clerk mutter under her breath to colleague, "I wonder who he'll be voting for."

Pixxie7 · 12/12/2019 20:14

It hasn’t been normalised it’s been a stick to beat labour with. However there is a lot more to this election. Like social inequalities, the NHS, homelessness need I go on?

shrumps · 12/12/2019 21:34

I voted labour. It was a vote against the Conservatives, rather than 'for labour'. I don't feel represented, respected, or have any real affiliation for any of the parties I could choose from, but couldn't not vote, so it was the choice of the best of a really shitty bunch.

MargotMouse · 12/12/2019 22:18

It makes me feel sick, voting Labour today made me feel sick, but I felt I couldn’t vote for the Tories and risk them selling off the NHS.
