For everyone voting labour, how do you feel about the anti semitism associated with them?

Genuine question, not being goady.

I’ve always voted labour and would hate for tories to be re elected tomorrow. But the casual normalisation of anti Semitism scares me. I don’t want to vote someone into power who isn’t prepared to stand up for all ethnic minorities.

A lot of my left wing friends/colleagues seem to not see it as an issue, or think that as there’s more problems with racism from conservatives they are the less worse option.

U: labour supporter still voting labour
NU: labour supporter choosing alternative party

I am Jewish by birth and voting Labour.

Whalebird · 11/12/2019 20:38

Yes. I have reservations about Labour's stance on self-id, but politics is complex and I can't just vote on one issue.

"I'm willing to listen to minorities, and try to be better."

Actually I do get this sense from Corbyn. He went along to a seder some online friends hosted and took them home-grown beetroot for their chraim. I do think he really cares, which is a bloody good start for tackling the problem, and a world away from the attitude of Johnson.

Choufleur · 11/12/2019 20:42

Better than the islamaphobia associated with the tories.

I don’t believe Corbyn is anti-Semitic. I think he’s opposed to the way Israel deal with things and the annexing of Palestinian land.

Booberella9 · 11/12/2019 20:44

Made up bullshit orchestrated by the Tory owned media.

Meanwhile Tories actually act on their horrendous views toward EVERYONE.

Don't waste your vote if the Lib Dems have zero chance of getting in in your constituency. You may as well vote Tory or just piss on your ballot.

churchandstate · 11/12/2019 20:45

And I don’t believe Corbyn is anti-Semitic either. At all.

NailsNeedDoing · 11/12/2019 20:47

I don’t really understand why anti semitism is seen as different to any other type of racism, and I don’t believe the Labour Party has more racists in it than any other party.

There is support for Palestine within the Labour Party, when considering it is a nation that is severely oppressed and none of the other parties seem to give a shit, is a pretty good reason to vote for them.

Meggie2008 · 11/12/2019 21:01

Boris is every sort of "ist" that I can possibly think of, therefore a worse option.

Jo Swinson is awful too. How any woman can contemplate voting Lib Dem whilst she is leader is beyond me. Abhorrent woman.

Actionhasmagic · 11/12/2019 21:02

The Tory pr machine out in force tonight!

MarshaBradyo · 11/12/2019 21:03

I don’t think Corbyn is anti-Semitic and that Labour is worse than the other parties.

Although I’m not a Labour voter

maddening · 11/12/2019 21:06

As corbyn has been arrested protesting against racism I don't believe he is antisemitic, I don't think that there is a larger % of racists in labour than in the tories, rather I consider the tories would have the higher % of racists, bigots and homophobes than all the parties put together (excluding the dup).

So you are saying all the facts, quotes and references from the 28 independent sources in that article (see footnotes) are irrelevant because the Jewish author is a member of the Labour party??
Hmm

PerpetualCircle · 11/12/2019 21:20

I don’t like it, a Jewish MP had to have a body guard and and there have been MP resignations over the issue. Not good.

doublebarrellednurse · 11/12/2019 21:21

I've wrestled with it immensely. I'm a Jew, family immigrants, and I'm second generation British Jew.

In my constituency there was less than 1000 votes between Con and Lab last election. Con won. There were 4000 between Lab and Lib.

It's a two horse race. I will not vote for Con because I see what my service users have gone through over the last 9 years. What my colleagues and the health industry have been through. It's ridiculous out there.

I tend to see that the anti Semitism in the party is largely ignorance rather than malicious but that doesn't make it better. I don't think Corbyn understands or has made any effort to understand what is facing the community and has just attempted to dismiss the difficult things that have been happening.

B0bbin · 11/12/2019 21:31

There are all kinds of racists on both sides. The prime minister has used some really upsetting racist terms in a published book, albeit fiction novel, but so offensive. Have the media gone crackers about this? Nope. His own comments about muslims and gay people are so offensive that I'm completely blown away by the media's focus on anti- semitism in the labour party. It is something both parties need to eradicate completely but whilst many are saying JC should have done more to stop it, how about BJ being an actual perpetrator and a vile racist, homophobic leader!!??? He's getting away with it with his bumbling, clown like mannerisms, "oh, don't mind me, I'm just a priviliged posh racist..."
So, aside from racism in politics which i agree needs to be stamped out, what do you think about the policies. I think Labour's manifesto is looking like the most reasonable, realistic proposal.
Hope you make your mind up in time for tomorrow Smile

I don’t want to vote someone into power who isn’t prepared to stand up for all ethnic minorities.

The Torys don’t like any minority, gay, women, poor, other races....

I’m Jewish and will be voting red tomorrow.

TotHappy · 11/12/2019 21:35

I don't think there is a worse problem in labour than in society generally - but of course anti semitism is not ok. However, I don't think wishy washiness over anti semitism, slowness to react, glossing over etc is as bad as openly saying (and acting accordingly) that poor people, disabled people, vulnerable people and unlucky people should just fend for themselves because it's a dog eat dog world. Labours policies on nationalisation, social justice etc make perfect sense to me, and I think the Tories, as they have been since Thatcher but especially now, are just morally abhorrent. Labour would have to do and be a lot worse than systemically anti-Semitic to match them.

SylvanianFrenemies · 11/12/2019 21:38

I think it a societal issue, not a Labour-specific issue.
I am Jewish and the I will be voting Labour. Mixed family background and I celebrate Christmas, before anyone tries to discredit me!
Jeremy Corbyn's handling of things hasn't been perfect, but he worries me a lot less than Boris Johnson does. At least JC hasn't published a book with lazy Jewish stereotypes in it.

leafyygreens · 11/12/2019 21:39

@MorganKitten which is why I said I would never vote Tory Crown Hmm

I stand by my statement that I’m uneasy about voting someone to power who isn’t prepared to stand up for all all minorities

BJ isn’t the benchmark and the continued argument just that tories are worse is frustrating

OP posts:
ivykaty44 · 11/12/2019 21:44

I have no worries at all about voting Labour.
I will confess to trying to understand the anti semetic sentiment and still haven't got to the bottom of it. Is it JC's sympathy to Palestinians?

I’ve yet to find anyone willing to give a clear answer

Monsterinmyshoe · 11/12/2019 21:46

The same way I feel about antisemitism, Islamophobia, sexism, homophobia and all of the prejudice that is evident in some other parties. It is not just a Labour issue. It is wrong in all parties.
