For everyone voting labour, how do you feel about the anti semitism associated with them?

Genuine question, not being goady.

I’ve always voted labour and would hate for tories to be re elected tomorrow. But the casual normalisation of anti Semitism scares me. I don’t want to vote someone into power who isn’t prepared to stand up for all ethnic minorities.

A lot of my left wing friends/colleagues seem to not see it as an issue, or think that as there’s more problems with racism from conservatives they are the less worse option.

U: labour supporter still voting labour
NU: labour supporter choosing alternative party

It’s something I’ve given a lot of thought, it does really worry me. Someone said to me recently when picking which party to vote for there’ll never be a perfect solution you have to pick the one closest. For me labour is this and I’m going to hope they sort their shit out.

TacoLover · 11/12/2019 18:53

I can understand people voting Lib Dem instead of Labour because of antisemitism like you OP. What I cannot understand is people voting Conservative instead of Labour because of antisemitismConfusedBoris Johnson is possibly one of the most racist people in politics!

Solihooley · 11/12/2019 18:58

I think they same as everyone else I know (Jewish people inc). That they are no more antisemitic/racist than any other party, probably slightly less. A lot (not all ) of it comes down to disagreement over Israel being labelled as antisemitism. A lot of it is whipped up by the press as a stick to beat them with whilst they largely ignore other cases of antisemitism in the Tory party. Did you all know that Boris wrote a novel that was actively antisemitic and portrayed some of the worst tropes about Jews? It hasn’t been widely reported on, and I’m sure he will say it was ‘fictional’ but if that was Corbyn he’d have been crucified by the press. The Rabbi made himself look like a twonk. He is very pro Israel and also a friend of BoJo and if anything his comments make people think the whole thing is more of a smear campaign rather than true concern. Also he doesn’t speak for all Jewish people.

For anyone worried about this issue can recommend reading this.

fruitpastille · 11/12/2019 19:01

I'm also torn between labour and lib dem. They both have a good chance in my area (first and second last time) so it really is a dilemma!

PooWillyBumBum · 11/12/2019 19:02

I’m voting labour because I want to unseat our Tory MP and the Tories - especially their leader - are much more vocal with their racism and no one seems to care!

I don’t believe JC is a racist, it just seems like poor leadership, and I sincerely hope racism is stamped out of all parties.

I can understand you voting for LD instead - unfortunately they don’t have a chance here and their policies don’t largely align to my beliefs so I’m a bit stuck really!

coldlighthappier · 11/12/2019 19:03

Conservatives are historically incredibly racist (current leader is following that trend) so I certainly wouldn’t be voting for them. I support Labour policies and their leader so I’ll still be voting them

Solihooley · 11/12/2019 19:07

Actually, I’m not definitely voting labour either. I’m torn between them and Lib Dem’s. I’m just anti current Tory party.

Mandatorymongoose · 11/12/2019 19:08

I'm Jewish. I will be voting Labour.

I don't believe the labour party or Corbyn particularly are anti-semitic any more than any other political party (by which I mean there might be the odd one or two people who hold awful personal views).

I do think Corbyn holds some views on Israel / Palestine and Zionism which isn't the same as anti-semitism and is perfectly reasonable as a political viewpoint to be debated. I think what he probably wants given his historical record is a peaceful outcome which seems like a good thing.

It feels a lot like there has been some awful media bias over the past few months.

Rainbowhairdontcare · 11/12/2019 19:09

@Solihooley true. But as a Jew, JC never apologised until the very end, why was it so hard? Most rabbis apart from some ultra orthodox sects are Pro Israel. Most Jews are, and also most of us are for a two state solution.

Soontobe60 · 11/12/2019 19:09

OP, I too am not Jewish, but have many Jewish friends. Have a look at what Michael Rosen has to say on it. He's an ardent Jewish Labour supporter, and what he says about the issue makes good sense.

BJ is the ultimate racist. Everyone is fair game as far as he's concerned, and he thinks that saying sorry makes it all ok. A little bit like kids in the playground who purposely trip up other children then instantly say sorry and expect it to be forgotten, only to do it again the next play time.

Saz432 · 11/12/2019 19:09

If you’re

ScreamingValalalalahLalalalah · 11/12/2019 19:10

I'm voting on a single issue - to get the best chance of stopping Brexit. I'm no fan of Corbyn, but he's marginally better than Bojo and it will either be Labour or Tory where I live, so no point voting Lib Dem.

MoonlightBonnet · 11/12/2019 19:12

I’m a Labour member and I have seen anti-semitism in the party, including some really bad stuff. However, I have never seen it go unchallenged. The Labour Party will never be dominated by anti-semites.

Moomin12345 · 11/12/2019 19:14

Genuine question - what antisemitism? All I've heard were vague smears, no evidence.

Evilspiritgin · 11/12/2019 19:15

According to a lot of people on here if you vote Tory you are racist , disablist and stupid can we now say that all Labour voters must be anti Semitic ?

Saz432 · 11/12/2019 19:17

Sorry, most of my post vanished.

If you’re concerned about this - and we should all be concerned about allegations of racism - I would recommend looking at the Facebook page of poet Michael Rosen who’s been extensively posting about supoort for Corbyn amongst the Jewish community and presenting an alternative view. He believes that the media have done an excellent job of stoking fear within the Jewish community, and I can’t disagree.

AuntSpiker · 11/12/2019 19:18

What about islamophobic comments from the PM? I'd find that much more worrying

I find them equally worrying. Why is anti Semitism of less concern? There clearly is something serious going on in the Labour party regarding anti Semitism. Too many people with nothing to gain by doing so, have spoken out.

Saz432 · 11/12/2019 19:19

Nice false equivalency there. Racist hate crimes have more than quadrupled under this government, as have hate crimes against disabled people. Tory cuts have disproportionately affected disabled people and caused a high number of deaths.

fedup21 · 11/12/2019 19:21

Completely agree.

Spamantha · 11/12/2019 19:23

I am holding my nose and voting Labour where I thought this would be a red line for me.

I believe that Corbyn is generally opposed to racism but, against his own better judgment, has anti-Semitic biases.

If I thought he had any prospect of winning a majority, I'd likely vote Lib Dem. That said, I don't believe Corbyn would ever introduce racist policies.

However, the likely victor tomorrow has directed racist comments and black people and Muslims, has made sexist and classist comments, is very homophobic and, let's be frank, is human garbage. We're also only a couple of years from the racist Windrush scandal under the Torries.

In the circumstances, I'm casting my vote for Labour to improve the chances of a hung parliament.

ForalltheSaints · 11/12/2019 19:24

I don't think it is casual normalisation. I just think it is a failure to act when some members have made anti-semitic comments. It may be partly because expulsions are something Jeremy Corbyn finds distasteful, who knows?

The failure of others or other parties is no defence.

Ylfa · 11/12/2019 19:26

If anyone is interested in learning more about the origins, as well as how to recognise contemporary forms, of antisemitism there is a free online course: www.yadvashem.org/education/online-courses/antisemitism.html

MamaNewtNewt · 11/12/2019 19:26

It really concerns me, I think when Jewish people are saying there's an issue and they'd be worried if Corbyn became PM that's something we should pay attention to. I don't think it is clear that he is personally anti Semitic but he definitely hasn't dealt with the issue decisively and it has really damaged the Labour Party.

That said I truly despise Johnson and the Tories and think it will be a disaster for anyone who isn't a white, able-bodied, straight, rich, white man so I'm voting tactically for Labour. But I do it with a bit of a heavy heart.
