Drank week expired apple juice :(

Was craving some apple juice earlier, bough over a litre in Tesco (Copella apple and elderflower). Got home and drank nearly half of it Blush before realising it expired on 30/11!!!

Bottle says this is a best before date...do you think I'll get sick? Sad it looks, smells and tastes ok. But how old is too old?!

You'll be fine

Jeezoh · 06/12/2019 19:06

Apple juice that has gone over tastes rank, if it tasted ok still it’s fine.

porridging · 06/12/2019 19:06

It’ll be fine it has crazy long best before date not a use by date and a week isn’t going to make any difference

Celebelly · 06/12/2019 19:07

Also you're more likely to get drunk than sick with out-of-date fruit juice. But it's quite obvious taste-wise when it's fermented!

TheFlis12345 · 06/12/2019 19:08

You will be fine. Best before dates are just advisory for the product to taste its best. Use by dates are the ones you need to pay attention to.

Jodie77 · 06/12/2019 19:08

Yes I'd think at worst it would have tasted bad or got you slightly tipsy.

Outsomnia · 06/12/2019 19:11

6 days out of date? Are you serious, you will do yourself immeasurable harm by drinking this. How could you?

Ah I am kidding. I rarely check the dates on liquids, just do the awkward movement of bottle or tub to nose, and if it smells OK, it's good to go.

I had a Greek yogurt yesterday dated end September. Smelt fine, tasted fine and I'm still here to tell the tale.

Saving on food waste me! I shall polish my halo in a bit.

Petrichor11 · 06/12/2019 19:11

Unopened and tasting fine will be fine I’m sure, especially as it’s a best before not a use by date. Apple juice is pretty safe and unlikely to be harbouring anything nasty, it was unopened and stored in a shop fridge so the temp would’ve been monitored and kept stable, and it smelled, looked and tasted fine.

I’m the same as you, I panic about these things, but really what can you do about it now? It’s highly unlikely to have any adverse effects, but if it does there’s nothing you can do about it right now.

fluffiphlox · 06/12/2019 19:14

Oh yes apple juice 6 days after its best before is one of the deadliest things known to mankind. Second only to novachok.

AgeLikeWine · 06/12/2019 19:14

If it looks fine, smells fine and tastes fine, it will be fine. If it was off, it would be obvious.

You’ll probably live, OP.

pooopypants · 06/12/2019 19:15

Dunno OP, have you got your affairs in order?

Far2go46 · 06/12/2019 19:15

If you're lucky you made have made scrumpy

Winkywoop · 06/12/2019 19:20

I'm not scared of dying, I'm scared of throwing up! Emetophobic Sad

Thanks for the reassuring and less reassuring responses!!

Best before is different from Use By.
If it tasted alright you'll be fine.
Dates like that aren't set in stone anyway.

IHaveBrilloHair · 06/12/2019 19:22

Why the blush emote because you drank half of it?
You'll be fine btw, but I'm wondering about that, why would it be embarrassing to drink some juice?

DontFundHate · 06/12/2019 19:23

It's a best before date!! Not a use by!!! So much food wastage around if people don't understand this

MustardScreams · 06/12/2019 19:23

Oh op you’ll be fine. Fermented drinks are actually great for you, I use shop bought juices to ferment in kombucha all the time.

HollysBush · 06/12/2019 19:24

You’ll be fine. I’ve just eaten a muller rice dated 26th Nov.... Try to distract yourself or you’ll think yourself nauseated!

Ihavethefinalsleigh · 06/12/2019 19:25

I drank some longlife milk in my coffee this morning. The use by date was April. I'm fine.

Winkywoop · 06/12/2019 19:25

Brillo the bit I didn't mention was I downed it straight from the bottle before I'd even stepped through the front door Crown Grin

You’ll be just fine, honestly

WhoAmIToTellYou · 06/12/2019 19:54

On things like juice you can easily add a week to their best before date, that’s built into the date... ‘best before’ is not ‘poisonous after’...

sonjadog · 06/12/2019 19:55

If it was off, you would have noticed. You will be fine.

amusedbush · 06/12/2019 19:56

Off apple juice tastes awful, you’d know after a sip if there was anything wrong with it. You’ll be fine Smile

ClosedTheBlueEyes · 06/12/2019 20:00

If it's not fizzy or furry, crack on
