Job Application WWYD

If you were applying for an internal role, would you start to help the department out, before getting the role, to show how useful you could be?
I have a particular skill set, A, that only I have and it is really needed in this team.
I'm worried if I did this, the manager may think, no need to give Namechange the job as shes doing it now (even though it does not fit in my current JD) and give the job to another person with strength in skill set B.
The role can be strong in either skillset.
If I didn't get the role, any support would have to stop as it does not fit into my role long term.
YANBU = give the support in advance, it will help you get the job
YABU = no help till job is yours

P.s. The manager is already leaning on me for support, however I am aware they have approached other colleagues with skill B to apply for the role (as well as myself)

Will your skill be needed long term, and is it clear that you wouldn't be able to help long term unless you got the job? If yes on both counts, then yes, I'd help. If no to one or both, then no.

Not U entirely but couldn't you speak to your manager and ask rather than subterfuge?
As a manager, I would rather have had a direct conversation than a hint.
Good luck. Hope whatever you decide works

I have a particular skill set

Are you Liam Neeson?!

FizzyGreenWater · 03/12/2019 18:55

RTF! OP has already confirmed that yes she is Liam Neeson Hmm

NamechangeProtectIdentity · 03/12/2019 18:57

Sorry couldn't resist Grin

But it is needed long term, but not sure how to phrase 'I can do this on a short term basis only' convo as I'd basically lay all the groundwork, and it would impact my ability to do a proper job in my current role.
