To think that Americans have weird first name preferences!

Why do so of their popular first names sound like surnames?

Chace
Trace
Brock
Blake
Penn
Tucker
McKenna

Etc

Of course there are the usual standard names too, but it’s odd that you just don’t see the above kinds of names in the UK.

"Brother Bear"?

romylee · 04/12/2019 14:58

I actually prefer most American names. And Americans aren't as judgmental as the UK seems to be - especially going by the baby name threads!
Names like Brittany, Courtney, Kinsley, Mason etc have been called "chavy" here (not my opinion) whereas in the US they would be children of the rich.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 05/12/2019 16:56

Why would anyone call a girl "Kingsley"?

HoldMyLobster · 05/12/2019 17:23

My male neighbour’s first name is Carol.

His son is called Carl.

I admit I’m confused.

deplorabelle · 05/12/2019 19:48

Pope John Paul II's original name was Karol.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 05/12/2019 20:03

John Wayne's real name was Marion Morrison.

Clove James was born Vivian.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 06/12/2019 09:44

I'm not sure if Clove's an improvement, if I'm honest. Hmm

Karol is Polish for Charles.

HoldMyLobster · 07/12/2019 16:21

The funny thing is I didn't realise his name was Carol even after 12 years of knowing him, because everyone called him Old Grampy.

Dontgochasingunicorns · 09/12/2019 17:54

My daughter often gets "oh, that’s unusual!" When hearing my granddaughters name, she’s called Sloane.
