Meat alternatives

Hi I just wondered if people are as frustrated as me. There was a great soy based mince I brought from tesco and I think Sainsbury’s did their own version but yesterday all the veg fridge section only had Quorn which does not agree with me does not cook well and not great taste. The soy mince was very popular in my household and better than anything else I’ve tried and tasted! Bring it back

Tweet/email them?

I noticed that Tesco has started putting some of their vegetarian items in the meat fridges, to encourage people to eat less meat apparently. It's stupid because I just avoided the butchery aisle.

Bumping

Why are you bumping after 23 minutes? It's not urgent.

TheElfFellOffTheShelf · 01/12/2019 12:38

I've never seen tesco's own mince I don't think but their fake chicken pieces are nicer than Quorn's. I also like that Oomph! stuff which I think is made from soya protein and has a nice texture. I don't think they do mince though.

Why the need to use "meat replacement" at all ?

What's wrong with pulses - chick peas, lentils, black beans, ... they are just as good.

TheStaleBiscuitofDoom · 01/12/2019 12:55

Why the need to use "meat replacement" at all ?

Presumably because they enjoy them?

OP. As a previous poster suggested try the meat aisle because they have moved some meat products to their own section but within the meat aisle.

The best one IMO is "Meat the Alternative" from Waitrose .
Often out of stock, and I don't want to order online in case they decide to substitute a load of Quorn mince .

Quorn is too grainy textured and too sweet .

There used to be Real-eat which was then made by Linda McCartney (under the Realeat name still) then discontinued .

I've tried the supermarket brands , but none compare .

Beans . lentils and pulses have their place but I don't want pasta with lentils thanks .

And I've been a vegetarian for 39 of my 53 years on this Earths crust and avoided mince like the plague when my DMum cooked it . (So I'm not desperately missing eating meat here)
Raw mince , whole onion, water , Oxo cube . In the pressure cooker , up to pressure then left . She never browned it , chopped or browned the onion, or simmered it .
She saw some (random shite) programme where they cooked mince all ways but said there was no difference in taste ......so she decided to stop any unnecessary cooking involvement .
I've seen boiled dishcloths that looked more appetising Envy < boak.

I like all these options at different times. I like choice. Surely it’s why have anything when you could have something else?

@70isaLimitNotaTarget Meat the Alternative is really good, I haven’t seen it in ages since our Tesco stopped doing it

purplelila2 · 01/12/2019 12:59

I really miss Tesco and sainsburys veggie bacon I loved the stuff.

Quorn isn't the same at all !

easyandy101 · 01/12/2019 13:00

Tivall is decent

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 01/12/2019 13:08

Buffalo it is hard to track down , but when I find it in the freezer , I am Grin

Tival is ok, but very fine texture .
MtA is more chunky .
There used to be one in H&B , steak pieces but it was too sweet .

Anyone remember (from the mid 70s ) there was a mince / steak tinned (same size as a tin of beans) . I'm not sure if it was 100% soya or mixed with meat?
The advert was something like " beans are cheaper to grow than cows" .

It vanished off the shelves sadly .

We like Meatless Farm Co for mince and sausages, we haven't tried their other products. I've seen it in the chiller sections of Sainsbury’s and Co-op.

Farmfoods of all places meat free mince is so good. It has the exact same texture as real mince. Their "chicken" peices are also very good.
