If I lock the front door so DS1 can't keep trailing through the house with his muddy shoes

Despite the fact that I have written a note and stuck it to the front door saying "take off muddy shoes before coming in the house", and I grounded him last week fro having very wet mud on his shoes and coming into living room, kitchen and going upstairs so there was a huge trail of mud. He's9, he should know this.
I know I'm ranting, but it's a married quarter and the carpet in the hall is black with the mud from his bloody shoes, we have just been charged £159 for a muddy carpoet in our old house that the cleaners couldn't get the mud out of.. DS2 remembers to take his off after being in the mud.
