If I lock the front door so DS1 can't keep trailing through the house with his muddy shoes

Despite the fact that I have written a note and stuck it to the front door saying "take off muddy shoes before coming in the house", and I grounded him last week fro having very wet mud on his shoes and coming into living room, kitchen and going upstairs so there was a huge trail of mud. He's9, he should know this.
I know I'm ranting, but it's a married quarter and the carpet in the hall is black with the mud from his bloody shoes, we have just been charged £159 for a muddy carpoet in our old house that the cleaners couldn't get the mud out of.. DS2 remembers to take his off after being in the mud.

YANBU. Have you thought about wooden floors? But your reference to married quarter suggests that it is not your house therefore not worth the investment?

YANBU whatever.

Couldn't get away with wooden floors in an MQ I'm afraid.

No. YANBU. Could you perhaps hide all his shoes so he can't go out in the first place? Our carpets are so filthy now I'm embarrassed to get anyone in to clean them . But hard floors downstairs just concentrate all the mud on the stairs...

You could put some of that geriatric home plastic matting stuff down - eeeewwww!

No YANBU, I would definitely lock him out, or make him clean the carpet!

YANBU. Doing it for a couple of weeks might concentrate his mind slightly.
