AIBU Royal Family and the US Press

Apparently the Epstein saga involved the Palace threatening ABC (US network) a “million different ways” to prevent the pedophile story coming out in 2016. We only know that because of the hot mic leak. Why would the Palace be so arrogant to think they can threaten a US channel? If they do that to the US, how in control are they of the British press? (Though apparently one of the threats was no interviews with Will and Kate, but do they even do interviews with foreign news outlets?)
