About the Vagina Museum

It’s a new museum in Camden intended to generate discussion about women’s bodies and to educate girls in particular about gynaecological health. Great! Except all of the imagery is of vulvas not vaginas. AIBU to expect people to know the difference?

I saw this one coming when I saw the name of the museum mentioned in the hairy thread.

Hard to get a picture of a vagina

DeborahAnnabelToo · 20/11/2019 01:02

If they'd called it the Vulva museum it might have just attracted a load of long-sighted car enthusiasts.

I agree as per anatomically or scientifically, but that is the way the word is widely used and understood in the UK, as a kind of overall catch-all for the entire female genitalia, including but not limited to the true or city of vagina, as well as the surrounding or greater vagina area.
part of the confusion arises because the anatomical vagina is not visible ordinarily.
cf the conflation of stomach with abdomen...

Maybe pop in there on a wet day, find out for yourself.

Pierrettelasanguinaire · 20/11/2019 02:33

Are they accepting donations?

StarlightLady · 20/11/2019 05:49

Although the OP brings reality into the situation, l think we have to go go with language that most people seem to use.

RadishesAndLentils · 20/11/2019 05:55

Given that one of their mission statements is "Promote intersectional, feminist and trans-inclusive values", the Vagina museum is probably not going to be a big hit on Mumsnet anyway.

RadishesAndLentils · 20/11/2019 05:59

They mention the existence of the Penis Museum in Iceland as part of their inspiration. I wonder if that museum also includes testicles. Which would sort of be the same. "Penises and related stuff", "Vaginas and related stuff (like the labia)".

Moonmelodies · 20/11/2019 06:15

It might pop along. It would be interesting to see what vaginas were like in olden times. What's the oldest they have? Are they from all different species?

longwayoff · 20/11/2019 06:20

Tried to donate my dusty old unused one that's been unused for years but no reply. Might pop it in the post.

I went to an event they held at the Royal Institution. It’s not about ‘women’s bodies’, they said. It’s about ‘vagina-havers’. At the point where they announced their next event was going to include a book signing by a penis-owning TRA who has stated very clearly in the past that they think girlhood & womanhood have nothing to do with having a vagina, I was out.
