To not watch the news?

AIBU in not choosing watch the news / read the newspapers? I occasionally listen to the radio and the news will be on or would very occasionally read a newspaper but don’t generally have the time) but the world seems such a depressing place I am not sure I really want to know what’s going on.

I’m interested enough to want to know what’s going on but not naive enough to think news sites are unbiased. Therefore I read everything and anything.

RedSheep73 · 15/11/2019 19:03

Anything important enough will find you. The papers are mostly rightwing propaganda anyway.

i dont do any either

i only find things our via Facebook or if i open up google and its there on the page

Not being unreasonable in your choice but I personally find it weird when people say they don't keep up with the news, especially those that proclaim it proudly.

Also agree with Finfintytint. I try and read from different sites and it's astonishing (but not surprising) how the same story can be reported so differently.

I try not read comments BTL however, including Youtube. Yahoo News is the absolute worst though.

Yanbu. I turned on the news this morning and first there was some woman on it claiming that the oil and gas industry is a good thing Hmmand then a horrendous boris Johnson interview. There was of course some Brexit crap thrown in for good measure. I found the whole thing depressing and wished I hadn't bothered!

marvellousnightforamooncup · 15/11/2019 20:20

It is really depressing. I find myself shouting at the telly more often than not. I'm particularly annoyed at the standard of journalism. The breakfast news shows are hours long but not long enough to analyse veracity only parrot soundbites. We have 24 hour rolling news channels, same applies. False balance, no critical thinking.

I read lots of different sources and follow a range of people on Twitter instead.

sableandI · 15/11/2019 20:34

I don't watch the news or read the papers either . It's all depressing and I'm the last 30 seconds they say something up beat!

FlashesOfRage · 15/11/2019 20:37

I just find all of it deeply distressing or enraging.

Add to that the fact I know what I’m seeing or reading has been entirely manipulated to make me react a certain way or think certain things.

I just think I’m living a much better life by avoiding it.
