To get small black leather bag cleaned? Has a few mainly makeup stains - advice on how to clean it myself and use the money for wine instead, please?!

Is it the lining? Or the actual leather? Would saddle soap work on the leather?

On both but not too fussed about lining, more the actual leather. I’ve never even heard of saddle soap but will investigate!

It’s pebbled leather, if that makes any difference!

Bung it in the wash !, what are they going to do with it ? I've washed leather jackets , shoes , bags .. all sorts .. all fine ..

I think saddle soap is a safer option than the washing machine ( saddle soap is what it says on the tin, soap used to clean horses tack. So it is created to manage dirty leather)

Not sure what they were going to do with it, but it was fairly expensive so I’d be too nervous to put it in the wash! Read that saddle soap is too harsh for pebbled leather...

Buy some of this, it will have the bag looking like new.

I've always just wiped over leather bags with a damp cloth.

Using saddle soap is OK after it has been cleaned but otherwise will seal the dirt in.

I have a couple of bags to wash. I will also say that I have washed leather bags by hand in the past and as long as you stuff them to keep the shape they are fine, I looked it up this time because of the colour of one of mine.

You can leave the bag in water for about an hour apparently. Google it BTW, if you want to check.

Leather is fine but I wouldn't wash lambskin or anything fine, like some of the high end designer bags.

Find out what they are going to do with it .. leather is skin and doesn't like chemicals ( a cow would never come across chemicals on its skin in real life) .. water is actually safer a lot of the time . Can you link to the bag .?

How expensive is expensive op? And what sort of makeup stains, and how old are they?

I've generally cleaned leather jackets with a soft cloth and milk as that is what an Italian leather person (in Italy) told me to do but I'm not sure if that's still the way to go as the only leather I have now is shoes and my purse as I don't really carry bags.

Mainly foundation I think, not loads but enough for it to need a good clean!

Saddle soap is used AFTER leather has been cleaned, it doesn't clean itself it's more used to nourish the leather and bring it up to a soft shine (you would normally wash tack first with hot water and then use the saddle soap).

So don't use saddle soap to clean your bag. It will also leave it a bit sticky so you might not want that on a handbag that you'll have next to your clothes.

Have you tried micellar water? Gets makeup off human skin after all...

Baby wipes.if you can keep the lining away from the leather you could try dabbing the stains with a tiny bit of facial wash and dab it clean with a slightly damp cloth until the stain goes.

I used to clean my leather bags with neutral shoe polish. The stuff in little tins. It cleans as well as protects. As its textured then cleaning and buffing with a soft shoe buffing brush would probably work.

What about baby wipes? Failing that I'd put it in a gentle wash.

On baby wipes, olive oil and makeup remover before paying that (separately I mean!). A combination of those finally got DS7's temporary Halloween tattoos off all his arms and face! (NEVER bloody ever again!!)

I think I'd be inclined to wipe clean with a damp cloth and a bit of detergent then apply shoe polish....

Which is certainly cheap.

I've got a lovely red leather bag with daft off white lining.
The outside of the bag has cleaned up of but what do I do with the minging lining?

Ooh ooh ooh - I randomly discovered this week that the Aldi version of 8 hour cream is an excellent leather cleaner.

I accidentally blobbed some on a 30yo calfskin Filofax which has had a couple of marks on the back since I inherited it, and in wiping it they've come straight off - I've previously had several goes with ordinary leather cream.

So that might be worth a go? But patch test on the base first?

If it's fresh staining, have you just wiped with a soft cloth dipped in soapy water first?
