I woke up last night roasting hot. Threw off the duvet and went back to sleep. Two hours later I was shivering uncontrollably and couldn't get warm. The night passed like that, I feel a bit fluey in that my limbs and my head ache, my skin too even! I had toast and water this morning and the resulting nausea has only just eased. I have slept most of the day and this is the first time I have been able to look at my phone. Temperature is 38.something all day. I have a slight pain in my lower back but that's much better now.

I live in Ireland where an ooh doctor would be €70/€80 which I can't afford. A&e would be €130! I am never sick so would like to think that sleep and Nurofen will have me feeling better by tomorrow. If not I will suck up the cost of a doctor's visit.

AFAIK there is nothing that can be done for flu (though I don't have a particularly sore throat or chest or owt like that) but if it's a UTI does one always have to have antibiotics?

I am really hoping to hear: oh there's a 24hr bug going around, you'll be better in the morning!

If you needed a reminder to treasure your NHS where you dont have to budget for a doctor's visit and the resulting medicines this is it

Have you any symptoms of a UTI?
I think it just sounds like a standard cold which can last a few days. The kids and I had it the other week. A GP appointment didn't feel necessary.

StoneofDestiny · 10/11/2019 16:37

Thank you for reminding us how valuable the NHS is to us all.

Yeah I'd say are you sure you don't have a UTI? And if not, it's probably a bad cold/borderline fluey thing.

My health care is free at the point of use and I wouldn't be going to the doctor for that either. It sounds like a virus. (I'm not a doctor - if you're worried, do see someone.)

ElevenOhFive · 10/11/2019 16:44

OP I live in NI and had pretty much what you have described for 24-48hrs last week - first day was nausea and vomiting and sleeping for almost the entire day, next day was recovering from the dehydration/weakness associated headaches. Day 3 I was back at work. Get well soon OP!

slartibarti · 10/11/2019 16:49

Your temp is only slightly up if it's around 38, so more likely to be viral than bacterial needing antibiotics.
I've just got over something similar, didn't go to GP as assumed it was a virus. Various muscle aches, headache, feeling sick. Temp didn't go above 38.4. After a week I got typical cold symptoms, followed by a cough but actually felt a bit better.
3 weeks later I'm over it.

Ladybirdman · 10/11/2019 16:52

Great! The fact that I am feeling a lot better in the past hour is a relief.

🤞 I've seen it off by now.

My DP is suffering from the same thing, we've just assumed he a mild case of the flu - he does have a runny nose as well though

FairyJuice · 10/11/2019 16:54

If the pain in your back isn't bad and you have no other UTI type symptoms I would just assume it's a viral illness. I remember having one a few years back where I had the high temp, felt like I'd been run over by a train and had a slight stomach upset, but no cough or sore throat.

Just for future reference, it might be worth checking your locality for a walk in clinic. We have one that opens every day til 10pm, you don't need an appointment and it only costs €30 per consultation, which is far better than the €60-70 that ooh costs.

slartibarti · 10/11/2019 18:04

...we've just assumed he a mild case of the flu...

Was about to say there's no such thing then thought I'd better check so googled.
And it seems I was wrong. Mild flu exists! Perhaps that was what I had.

RuggerHug · 10/11/2019 18:09

If you're thinking UTI lash the water into you. I'm assuming you're not in a boil water area? If you're in Dublin I think DubDoc is cheaper than that in case you need it and they're pretty quick about seeing you any time I've needed them.

RaininSummer · 10/11/2019 18:25

I am really surprised the people would seek to see a doctor so quickly for symptoms such as the op describes. Wouldn't you just assume that you had a bug for the first few days and only see a doctor if you didn't get better?

3catsandcounting · 10/11/2019 18:39

I have similar symptoms. Started this morning, and I've been in bed ever since. It's the only place I can be.
No temp, but aching limbs, painful joints, headache, nausea but not been sick. Shaky and shivery. Worst of pain in lower back (which is bring eased by a warm cat curled up against it).
Just can't get comfortable but want sleep.

BlankTimes · 10/11/2019 19:17

My GP's Is It Flu Test was to ask a patient if there and then they could crawl to the middle of a field containing a suitcase full of high-denomination banknotes that they could keep with no questions asked.

If they answered that they couldn't manage to do that, then he dxd flu.

Ladybirdman · 10/11/2019 20:11

3cats thats me! I feel like i have bruises all over. But i have slept a lot. I guess the nature of a virus is that it ebbs and flows. I felt woeful after posting that last bit. Thought I'd be sick but couldn't get further than my bathroom so my vomit bowl is a shower cap. I think it'd be fair to say someone else would have to get that money Today blank Sad

Its probably flu. Rest, plenty of fluids and whatever food takes your fancy!

dexterslockedintheshedagain · 10/11/2019 20:21

When you mentioned the ooh doctor I thought you meant as in ooh Matron in a Kenneth Williams voice. Then I realised what it meant Blush

3catsandcounting · 11/11/2019 11:40

Lady - a shower cap is somewhat more practical than a towel I had on my pillow, which doubled up as a sweat guard (the head sweats and nausea followed my last post.)
Had a very restless night; Even my ankles hurt! Day off work today, I now have 2 cats and a very happy dog looking after me.

Me too!

Glad you are feeling better OP.
