To ask for info about any nice villages around Stevenage?

As per the title. I have no knowledge on the area at all, and there's a slight chance we may have to move near there... not currently in the UK to visit there myself. I have a feeling I'm going to either hate it or not be able to afford what I want there.

Letchworth Garden City is nice, about ten miles away.

My dad lives there so I can’t give you any other info that it looks good!

nitgel · 06/11/2019 16:45

Letchworth or hitchin though they're more towns

Usernamqwerty · 06/11/2019 16:50

We live about 14 miles away (just outside Hertford). Stevenage has great transport links and shops and facilities, but I have heard it's quite rough and would avoid it IMO. Have heard Letchworth is nicer x

ToeTouchingTitties · 06/11/2019 16:51

Baldock is nice smallish town north of stevenage - good schools!

Usernamqwerty · 06/11/2019 16:52

Watton-At-Stone is nice and also on the train route to London x

My son lives in Stevenage I have turned off the main road a couple of times and gone through somewhere called Walkern. Very ptetty.

SpiderCharlotte · 06/11/2019 16:58

Baldock and Letchworth are both small towns, much bigger than villages.

Hitchin is lovely. Baldock is also nice but I'm not a fan of Letchworth. It's definitely improved in the last ten years and but it feels a very 'nothing-y' place to me, that's why I moved away. There are some nice places to eat though.

Villages near Stevenage Little Wymondley, Great Wymondley, St Ippolyts and Gravely.

SpiderCharlotte · 06/11/2019 17:00

Oh yes, Walkern is nice.

MontStMichel · 06/11/2019 17:10

I wouldn't live in Stevenage itself! Hitchin is nice, although its a town, not a village.

St0pTryingT0MakeFetchHappen · 06/11/2019 19:00

Hitchin is lovely - old fashioned village square, reasonably sized waitrose and direct train to London ~35 mins. Plenty of running routes through fields.

ohmysoul · 06/11/2019 19:02

Have a look at Tewin. Not too far from Stevenage and a gorgeous little village.

TremoloGreen · 06/11/2019 19:05

What spidercharlotte said, also Preston, Langley, Bragbury End, Titmore Green, Charlton. They're all pretty nice... Stevenage itself is a bit uninspiring, but has some useful shops compared to the other small towns around. Hitchin is good for coffee shops and little boutiques/ gift shops (and hairdressers)

TremoloGreen · 06/11/2019 19:08

Forgot Codicote and St Paul's Walden. Near to Welwyn GC too which has a cinema and a John Lewis

PotteringAlong · 06/11/2019 19:08

Knebworth?

Do you need access to London?

CostcoFan · 06/11/2019 19:08

It depends why you are moving near to Stevenage. I used to work for Glaxo many years ago and staff were spread from Kingston to Cambridge to Bishop’s Stortford to Berkhamsted with all the villages in between. So if it’s one person commuting for a job with fairly regular hours I think you can live a fair distance away - apart from Kingston, which was an outlier the rest were less than an hours drive. If it’s for kids and school or a job with extremely long and irregular hours you might want to be closer.

Thanks all! It's a possible work move for DH, company based in Stevenage. I'll start looking at all the suggestions here.
