To ask the meaning of 'woke'?

There's obviously the verb to wake, eg, 'she woke up' but I've seen it used a few times in threads where it had no connection to that verb and wondered what it meant as I've not come across it in real life.

Thanks.

It’s normally said in a negative way. It means someone is very liberal and open minded to the point where it’s a bit ridiculous and almost like they’re doing it to be trendy

Cornettoninja · 03/11/2019 15:03

It basically means the same thing as being PC.

PinkyU · 03/11/2019 15:03

In the contexts you’re describing it’s a derogatory name-calling tactic used for people who have general liberal leanings, and more specifically to this site, believe in the rights of (specifically) trans women to access amenities relevant to their gender identity as opposed to their sex. HTH

Google is good for these questions 🤔

Thanks very much for the explanations. I don't know why but because I had never heard it elsewhere, I think I assumed it was an MNism or I would have googled.

So it's a bit like virtue signalling - there seems plenty of that on here too.

Ultra pc, perhaps clouding their judgement, in their attempt not to offend one group upsetting another

TildaKauskumholm · 03/11/2019 16:10

I only ever see it used as a negative, would laugh if a person seriously used it about themself.

It originally started amongst African American people to describe fully seeing what's going on around them, racism, sexism etc. White middle class people took the term for themselves as they always do. See also intersectionality which was again a framework for African American women to see how the axes of opression hit them the hardest.

Now its applied to everything, to give middle class white people opression points. Feeling guilty that you are part of the oppressor class? Just dye your hair blue and proclaim that you're in a queer relationship despite being in a heterosexual relationship for 20 years, because you once poked your finger up ya husband's arse.
