AIBU to not pay full price?

Found a dress on Next today I liked, it's £100+ & made by a concession (a brand called HotSquash) whilst I'm looking at it, a message pops up that X number of people have purchased this dress in the last 24hours.

So I go to the Hotsquash website & they have a sale on, the same dress is £10!! So obviously I buy it there.

But who are these people paying £100+ for a dress they can get for a tenner?

It's like my MIL at Xmas buys loads of Lego from Argos, a quick search of the reference number for the sets show they can be purchased for £5-£20 cheaper each at Amazon, saving her around £50 plus parking etc.

I try to explain this to her every year, but still she pays full RRP for toys that can be purchased much cheaper elsewhere.

AIBU to let this rile me so much?!?

How do you do the lego reference number thing?

TheReluctantCountess · 02/11/2019 12:51

Lots of people prefer to buy in shops than buy online.

Jammydodger1981 · 02/11/2019 12:52

Just had a look at hotsquash, they’re selling the clothes under a no returns policy which I’m pretty sure is in contravention of consumer rights under distance selling regs so I wouldn’t be buying anything from there OP!

DisplayPurposesOnly · 02/11/2019 12:52

Yes, especially random people you don't know. Wind yer neck in, or find something more worthwhile to get riled about.

Presumably you are aware that many people dislike Amazon and actively choose to not shop there.

You've given your opinion, explained the options, now it's time to accept she prefers her way.

Singlebutmarried · 02/11/2019 12:54

@OhioOhioOhio the ref is on the box (model number if you like).

If I know that DD is after a particular set, I’ll look at it in the Lego site and then pop the model number into amazon.

Alb1 · 02/11/2019 12:55

Maybe the people shopping at next don’t bother checking the other website because they are buying stuff on their next account so couldn’t get it off the other website anyway. Some people prefer to pay a little extra supporting high street brands (and therefore local jobs) as many are struggling due to everyone buying stuff off the internet. Others just arnt as comfortable with the internet as you. I’m the same in that I shop around for the cheapest most of the time, but YABU to let it rile you

Hooferdoofer37 · 02/11/2019 12:56

@OhioOhioOhio every lego set has a code (usually on the box by the age range) so if you want a lego Hogwarts set it's:

Lego 75954

And you can google that and find prices from £60ish to £100 and who's selling them.

Or go to Camelcamelcamel which is a price comparison site.

When you know you're getting the same item, I just don't understand paying more!

OP posts:
22Giraffes · 02/11/2019 12:56

I know what you mean, some of my family don't have the time, patience or will to hunt down the best price for an item and it drives me crazy! Obviously it is their right and none of my business but often a quick Google is all it takes to find the item cheaper.

Hooferdoofer37 · 02/11/2019 13:04

@22Giraffes glad it's not just me 😂

I do feel bad that my MIL (who doesn't have a great deal of money) could save herself some cash by being a bit more savvy.

Thank you.

FemaleEcho · 02/11/2019 13:48

There's a thread where a woman is asking why people buy new when they can get the same thing second hand?

I think you might be told the same answer which was, not everybody has the free time to spend searching all the websites looking for bargains.

You aren't unreasonable to do this yourself but you are unreasonable for being angry others choose to do something else with their own money.

ChrisPrattsFace · 02/11/2019 13:52

Some people have the money and are happy to spend it, some people don’t and will bargain hunt. Each to their own!

MrsMaiselsMuff · 02/11/2019 13:53

It takes seconds to do a price comparison.

I agree OP. But that also means I end up shopping for the whole family as they know I'll get the best deal.

AthollPlace · 02/11/2019 13:56

Buying second hand vs new isn’t the same as buying new but paying more for the exact same item in the exact same condition.

GeorgiaGirl52 · 02/11/2019 14:23

When I can I buy retail at local shops to support small businesses. First Walmart and then Amazon are destroying Main Street/High Street shopping and many people who are your neighbors are losing their jobs. Think of the cost difference as a donation to your community.

KilljoysDutch · 02/11/2019 15:25

Those x people have purchased/ x amount of people are looking at this right now are usually randomly generated if you look at the websites source coding.

Skinnychip · 02/11/2019 15:40

I like a bargain and if i am buying something expensive or branded i would do a quick search to see where it is cheaper. However if i see something at a price i think is reasonable i wouldn't neccessarily look elsewhere.
My MIL absolutely refuses to have anything to do with computers or smart phones and won't "can't " use them, so she shops in Debenhams, m and s, JL and lakeland for just about everything! But she's happy with her shopping trips and never complains about the price of anything FIL does each time she goes shopping though
I have a work associate who spends hours investigating the price of things. If he buys something and later there is a sale, he returns it for a refund and buys back at sale price. He bought an item last year on black friday and was happy with the sale price. Then on the monday it was about £3 cheaper (i think the item was about £60) so he returned it to amazon and bought it again at the slightly cheaper price....which imo is quite petty and a bit of a waste of time.
