To be annoyed I never have a witty put down when I need one

On lunch break today and went to the shops. Pretty busy as it’s half term

Some guys in front of me (def over 30) are messing around, one of them mock-pretends to lift up one of the ornate massive plant pots and makes a fake groaning noise. He sees me coming towards him. I have fixated my eyes on a large picture of Ariana Grande in a nearby shop because I don’t want to make eye contact with this moron.

As I don’t react or even glance at this non event he shouts at my back as I walk away ‘OH MY GOD YOU ARE SUCH A WOMAN!!’

I carried on walking and I’m so annoyed with myself at the many put downs I have come up with after the event like usual so its ruined my day Grin

do men really not realise this kind of thing is anything but entertaining or impressive and it’s ok to shout at them when they don’t laugh? Confused

Why would you even engage at all with him? Silence is often the best response.

BritishHorrorStory · 31/10/2019 14:09

9 times out of 10, “it takes one to know one” works.

TowelNumber42 · 31/10/2019 14:11

American TV has a lot to answer for. Nobody does witty put downs in real life. If they did they would probably get punched, fired, divorced or put on the naughty step forever depending on role. Bored ignoring with maybe an eye roll is the norm and the best.

VisibleShantiLine · 31/10/2019 14:15

I don't understand what the bloke wanted. Did he want you to giggle and admire him?

If I had my wits about me (often though, you get caught off guard) I would have turned around and asked "Sorry, are you talking to me?"

I think these idiots sometimes yell stuff out because they don't think you'll actually call them on it.

PookieDo · 31/10/2019 14:18

He wanted me to laugh I think

I know I think answering back might have surprised him!

Good point about TV. I think in RL most people just ignore and don’t say anything

I’m annoyed he shouted at me and I didn’t respond

I don't get it? Why'd he say that? What kind of woman? Eh?

VladmirsPoutine · 31/10/2019 14:47

I don't even understand his comment towards you. What is being "such a woman"?

You're response though you might not think it was actually the best. You fixed your glaze elsewhere and ignored him. In this particular circumstance he would have wanted a reaction from you, any sort of reaction so if you'd responded with a witty reply he'd have got what he wanted and probably laughed with his mates. You responded exactly as you should have: with nothing.

That said, on the wider point of having a come back; it depends on the situation. I was called a smug cow the other day by a man as I didn't move out of the way for him, I responded with "Thank you" and a smile. It turned him mental Grin

VladmirsPoutine · 31/10/2019 14:49

Bastard typos! But I hope you get the essence of what I mean!

user1471517900 · 31/10/2019 17:00

Are you sure he didn't say it to his mate? Seems a strange insult to make to you

Sparklfairy · 31/10/2019 17:02

'so are you'

DarlingHusband · 31/10/2019 17:08

This was obviously a comment to his mate in reference to his failure to lift the heavy plant pot. It wasn't about you at all, so you were right not to comment

recrudescence · 31/10/2019 17:39

The esprit de l'escalier.

ViciousJackdaw · 31/10/2019 17:48

Darling This is exactly what I thought. He was talking about his mate.

OP, I really wouldn't fret. One man taking the piss out of another and absolutely nothing to do with you. They were completely unconcerned with your presence. Sorry if that wasn't what you wanted to hear.

PookieDo · 31/10/2019 18:11

No the guy who did the action said it and it was to me, he kind of had already hesitated so I had to pass him and he tried to make eye contact with me so it was in response to me not laughing and not reacting

OP posts:
PookieDo · 31/10/2019 18:12

I also hadn’t really passed him much before he shouted it, so it was very loud

OP posts:
PookieDo · 31/10/2019 18:14

When he did it he kind of looked around for his ‘audience’ and I was directly behind him

PositiveVibez · 31/10/2019 18:14

'Oh fuck off, knob' usually works for me 😂

PookieDo · 31/10/2019 18:16

Also sorry, it was said in quite a pointed slightly unpleasant tone
I think it meant women have no sense of humour and are boring
