John Peel

It's 15 years since he died. I was too young for him to have been the musical influence he was to some, but I loved listening to him on Home Truths. I was genuinely sad when he died.

Then there's the stuff about unprotected sex with young teenage girls and the 15 year old he married and shortly divorced. No suggestion that he sought out children or was abusive but every suggestion that he exploited his position to have sex with young teenagers and didn't take any responsibility for their safety. It was a different time in the 70s and 80s, but they were still girls.

So, I wonder how others process this, and similar, situations.

What’s the Bowie stuff? I’m not a particular fan but never heard of him being untoward.

dudsville · 26/10/2019 09:31

I didn't know this about John Peel. I'm glad to know. Although it was a different era, not every man did it. It still says something important about the man.

MissLadyM · 27/10/2019 02:29

Bowie, Iggy Pop, Jimmy Page etc 'used' well known 13 & 14 year old groupies such as Lori Maddox and Sable Starr. The girls claimed to love it and consented but it's utterly repulsive. Steve Tyler groomed a fan to hand over guardianship to her underage daughter so she could travel with him. It makes me I'll how these creeps are idolised.

www.google.com/amp/s/consequenceofsound.net/2017/11/the-uncomfortable-disregard-for-legendary-rockers-sexual-misconduct/amp/

Google John Perl dressed as a schoolgirl. He was fucking grotesque. But it was the 70s so that's ok isn't it?

Penelopeschat · 27/10/2019 02:59

I was a massive Home Truths fan and still miss it. I was ignorant of many of the things mentioned here, and am quite disgusted.

Penelopeschat · 27/10/2019 02:59

Agreed @dudsville

Rainatnight · 27/10/2019 03:10

Oh no, I didn’t know any of this. Sad How awful, awful, awful.

DonKeyshot · 27/10/2019 03:59

There is a great, if not vast, difference between predatory males, such as Savile, Peel, Glitter, the unspeakable piece of shit who was the lead singer of Lostprophets, etc who set out to sexually abuse and exploit underage children and those males such as Tom Jones, Bowie, Pavarotti, members of the Beatles, Stones,, and other singers/rock stars, racing drivers, tennis players, footballers etc who took advantage of their fame in more licentious times to sexually use girls who were only too willing to be seduced by their idols.

It seems to me it's an age-old story that's destined to be repeated throughout history and, as we've seen recently with Weinstein, Epstein, Green, Spacey, et al, it's an ongoing saga that won't be ended by legislation or, for that matter, education.

vivacian · 27/10/2019 06:51

I think it does change, by education and by shining a light and by saying, “this isn’t ok”.

OP posts:
DonKeyshot · 27/10/2019 07:01

For all the light shining and saying 'this isn't ok' it still goes on and, while there are predatory males and females and emotionally vulnerable or needy young people who can be exploited, it always will.

Margotshypotheticaldog · 27/10/2019 07:09

Like that radio interview with Quentin Tarrantino, where he talked about 13 year old "party girls" who are really "up for it".
It was absolutely chilling listening. I only heard a clip of it, but I believe he was sympathising with Roman Polanski.

Iamnotagoddess · 27/10/2019 07:33

I don’t think it’s fair to apply today’s standards and codes of conduct to 40 plus years ago.

Jimmy Saville and Glitter were peadophiles whovwentbto great lengths to cover up there disgusting behaviour. As far as I can see John Peel was not, and it’s unfair to group him with those men.

When I was a teenager in the late 80s I didn’t know it wasn’t ok to be preyed on by and have sexual relations with older men, so how did they magically know it wasn’t ok to find a teenager with the body of a women attractive?

It was a different time.

recrudescence · 27/10/2019 07:39

Public schoolboy who adopted a fake scouse accent. Total fraud.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 27/10/2019 07:57

It was a different time in the 80’s

I would get a lot of attention from older men especially when I wa sin my uniform

But not all men (and not the majority of men) but men who were predatory. Less protection around young people just made them more open about their behaviour ffs it was celebrated but it didn’t change behaviour

Erm, because they were older....? Confused

IamtheDevilsAvocado · 27/10/2019 13:27

It was never 'acceptable' to jave sex with minors /children....but many many predatory men got away with it....

People just weren't as knowledgeable as they are now about how grooming operates.
The CPS was less willing to prosecute
Many of gese young girls beloved these abusers to be their fiancee /boyfriend.

Look how the stone Bill got away with having sex with a barely teenage MSmith?

Tellmetruth4 · 27/10/2019 13:28

People did know it was wrong in the 70s and 80s it was just that people turned a blind eye when it was a celebrity. I was an 80s kid and knew there was something off about Jimmy Saville. I also remember the furore about Bill Wyman and Mandy Smith. Benny Hill was a comedian but was still seen as a dirty old man. In our neighbourhood, people used to warn each other about weird perverts.

It was never really ok to perve on the underaged but people never used to report it. They’d be ostracised or dealt with by locals. It is unbelievable how on one hand Rolph Harris was sent to jail but John Peel is treated as untouchable god because he’s seen as cool.

Are you serious @Iamnotagoddess? How did an adult not know they shouldn't prey on a child because it was the 80s? I was also a teenager in the 80 and I bloody well knew that children (even 14 year olds with big boobs like me) didn't have sex with adults.

senua · 27/10/2019 13:44

I refer you to Gary Puckett & The Union Gap's Young Girl.
A huge hit on both sides of the pond.
In 1968.
