Help my hair! My Skin!....

Posting for traffic. I’m nearly 40. In April I started experiencing sudden hair loss and very oily skin. This all started whilst I was on the pill - Marvelon. Fast forward six months... I’ve been off the pill 3 months, still experiencing lots of hairloss, very oily skin (I usually have dry skin) and now my periods are regular but so light literally spotting. No sanitary protection needed. What could this be?? Hormonal? It’s not thyroid related, I already have that and it’s well controlled. Please anyone! I’m losing my mind as well as my hair at a fast rate!!!! Strange my skin started to get oily whilst I was on the pill. Can my own hormone levels change even though I was on the pill? Anyone? I’m desperate. My gp has no interest 😢😢😢

It does sound hormonal. I came off the pill in June and my skin has definitely been more oily and I'm losing my hair. I had a blood test last week and I'm waiting for the results, my gp did mention most likely it is hormonal.

Early perimenopause?

HT85 · 21/10/2019 13:32

Definitely sounds hormonal but could be a number of things. I was on the pill pretty much consistently from 16-28. When I stopped taking it my hair started falling out (slightly) and my periods were very irregular plus terrible skin. Turns out I have slight PCOS that was masked by the pill for years.

Also though it could actually just be your body getting used to the change in hormones, coming off the pill it can take a very long time to regulate.

@HT85 my hair started falling out and skin getting oily before I stopped the pill though???

I reckon hormonal. You could have had a delayed reaction to your pill, and it does take time after stopping for all of the hormones to leave the body.

Perimenopause? PCOS?

I’m no expert on Marvelon, but if it contains an androgen in progestin then this could have caused your hair and skin problems. It’s common to lose hair for a few months after stopping the Pill, and it should stop after 3-9 months. Also common for skin to be bad after coming off it. Give your body time to recover, sometimes it can take a year.

No one can really answer the question for you on here OP you will need to see a doctor.

I can hear the desperation in your posts. Thing with any hormonal disturbances is that they can take a long time to balance out. Please don't drive yourself insane.

Get your bloods checked to rule out any other deficiencies, iron, b12, liver, (thyroid you already mentioned but if it's been affected you'll get the fallout) etc

I've experienced similar and it takes months and months for hair (and hormones) to recover.

Sarahlouiseis33 · 23/10/2019 16:55

@brassbrass - what hormonal problems did you have? It is driving me insane. I’ve lost so much hair and my skin has changed from quite dry to very oily!! Strangely though this started when I was still on the pill and has only got worse since coming off. Plus hardly any period to speak of since coming off 😢

Mine was triggered by soya milk I think though I have no proof. GP wasn't interested in my hair loss because although it was very noticeable to me she wanted to see actual bald patches. I had cystic acne and weight loss so much so that I could take my trousers off without undoing them.
Only thing GP did was put me on the pill which I've never been able to take and which made me feel like I was being cooked inside if that makes any sense.

I came off the soya milk and slowly everything returned to normal but as I said it did take months. The more you stress the more you add to it. I know it's easier said than done though!!

brassbrass · 23/10/2019 17:16

I didn't continue with the pill obviously. I stopped taking it after a couple of weeks as hated the way it made me feel.
