To think accumulating Nectar points is bloody hard?

I fill up £100 a week in fuel at Sainsbury’s, plus do my weekly shop there and spend on average £70 a week.

So that’s £170 a week on average I’m spending at Sainsbury’s each week. I use my nectar card for both.

Every year when it’s getting towards Christmas I eagerly look at my Nectar app to see how many points I’ve accumulated over the year...just looked ....£18. Is that it?!

Every year I can’t seem to accumulate more than £20 quid or so, yet I only shop in Boots probably once a month, spending about £30-40 and by the year end I have enough to buy myself a bottle of Chanel perfume (which is always my Christmas present to myself each year )

AIBU to think Nectar points are stingy?

Nectar points halved in value a couple of years ago (ish?!) and since then they've been rubbish. I don't really bother much with Nectar these days and just see it as a tiny little bonus every now and then, shopping at various supermarkets these days. But it used to be really worth shopping there for the points.

Do you make use of the bonus points vouchers? I think they really help. I am not near a Sainsbury's garage, but do most of my grocery shopping there. I usually have about £100 pounds to claim back each Christmas.

They are stingy but I don't understand why you've only got £18 so far when you're spending that much. I spend half of that and i've got more and have spent points this year. then again, I do make use of the coupons even though they're a faff - that's how they expect you to bump up your stash

You need to use up the special offers you get on coupons when you shop (triple points, extra points when buying specific items etc). I use Sainsbury’s far less than you describe but I have accumulated around £55 worth of points this year. I’ll use them next time they do the double points thing

I agree, it's rubbish. Nearly every weekday for about 6 months I've used the card and pass it to my colleagues, spending on average £10-20/day. I've got £5 on it!

Yeah I never seemed to accumulate much. We shop and fill up at Tesco and on track to get over £120 within 12 months, I will be using it for hotels.com voucher so will be worth £360.

It's worth keeping an eye out for extra points vouchers that you get at the till and other points deals, they quickly add up. Also if you take out any kind of Sainsbury's insurance you get double points for the duration of the policy, I've previously got a big wedge of points just for taking out a Sainsbury's credit card (used since only to get consumer protection in large purchases).

I bought a new iPad recently with my nectar points.

They aren’t brilliant but at the end of the day it’s free money that comes in handy on double up day

Do you get less points for petrol?
Doesn't sound right to me though. I spend about £100 a week in Sainsbury's and have currently got about £65 on my nectar card (accumulated since last Christmas).

You should have more than than that.
It's not my main shop at all, and I've got 80 over a year, using their vouchers too.

Something must have gone wrong.. Perhaps stop shopping there a few eeks and see what offers they give you.

Don’t forget to add your nectar card to your eBay account if you ever buy things from eBay.

I miss being able to pay for easyjet with Nectar points! We'd always pay for our holiday with them.

DH’s Nectar card has been hacked twice. Most recently he knew there was quite a bit on it and then following week he checked receipt after shopping and they were gone. Contacted them and they refunded them straight away. Sent him a new card. We figured they might have had a big hack on their systems.

First time someone used his Nectar points to buy something in an Argos. Got those refunded too.

It’s worth keeping an eye every week on your balance.

We don’t save them up too much now. Use them every couple of months. We get double as use a Sainsbury’s credit card and have pet insurance with them.

Our nectar card got hacked too. Since then I've noticed they are really slow to add up, i need to keep a better eye on it.
They are really pushing the app in our nearest store, I've not got space on my phone to install that too

You have to use the bonus, triple point coupons etc. Over the past 5 years we've accumulated enough for a lawn mower, laptop, printer and some Christmas toys - and I probably spend the same as you.
Do you and DH share an account so you're both saving towards the same balance?

Something's definitely wrong, I'm sure you must have earned more points than that.

We hardly ever shop at Sainsbury's but have my nectar card registered on eBay and get quite a few points that way.

Do you have the nectar app? I find that's good for keeping track of where the bonus points can be found. For example I was +40 points for buying a whole cucumber yesterday and +1000 for spending £50 on toys at argos. Online shopping with the nectar offers tends to be what boosts my points up most.

If you have time you can sign up for nectar surveys which I find really boost mine. Also using scan and save is being incentivised for me for an extra £7.50. Make sure you check the app a lot as well!
