To assume I haven't got the job?

Applied for a job three weeks ago and was called in for an interview, I passed the interview and the manager seemed impressed. I was offered a trial day for last Wednesday and told that another applicant also had a trial day for the Friday.

Trial day went well, I'm confident that I made a good impression. I was told I would hear the outcome at the start of next week (this week)

Tuesday comes and I haven't heard anything so I decide to check in, I'm told a decision will be made on Wednesday or Thursday.

I don't hear anything and as it's now Friday I don't expect I'll get a call over the weekend.

AIBU to assume at this stage I haven't got the job? I thought it was procedure to let the applicant know even if they're unsuccessful.

If it wasn't obvious enough then yes I was super keen as I really needed that job, made redundant recently and heading toward the red financially Sad

Don't assume anything, these decisions can be really hard and then need sign off from various senior people before offers get made.

It's bad they haven't been in touch before weekend, that drives me mad and employers should have more understanding for how awful the wait is, but equally as soon as they can communicate something they will!

Thank you gold, you raise a good point

If it's relevant, it's just a bog standard entry level job at a well known high street franchise. I have managerial experience in the hospitality sector but am that desperate for work I've applied well below my ability.

I hope that doesn't go against me and they don't think I'm over qualified as I know that can be off putting to prospective employers who might think I'd jump ship if something better came along.

Sounds shabby tbh....Did you get paid for the trial day?

goldpendant · 18/10/2019 23:18

Call them Monday!

Privac · 18/10/2019 23:22

Nope no payment discussed, I didn't raise it at the time as I was so confident I had the job in the bag I didn't want to seem grabby over a few hours unpaid work Sad

But if they're not giving me the job after all I would quite like to have that 40 odd pounds Sad

That SUCKS, and I feel like you've dodged a bullet as it's an indication to how well they treat their staff.

Obvs you know the industry better than me, but you do hear rumours of places offering trial shift to fill gaps in their rotas.

I know what it's like to be desperate for work, I'm really sorry tis has happened to you.

Privac · 18/10/2019 23:27

Thank you blocked

I'm very surprised at the poor communication, given that it is such a well known brand.

Its COSTA, can I say that here?

If they have messed me about just to fill a gap in their Rota I fully intend to lodge a complaint. What an abysmal way to treat people looking for much needed work.

Costa? That does surprise me that they do free trial shifts.

Someone I used to know worked there, as her full-time job and she loved it, but maybe she was just in a good branch.

Maybe worth another call, even though they should have contacted you either way though.

You will find something, hopefully more in line with your skills and experience.

Privac · 19/10/2019 00:02

Yep it's costa so that also surprised me.

I'm applying for jobs left right and centre so hopefully something else will come along soon, fingers crossed.

I hope that they have the decency to let me know either way. I think i will call once more on Monday and then cut my losses and move on.

I think if any of the staff there are Mumsnetters and read this thread you definitely won’t have the job

Bwah ha ha ha ha ha ha!
A quick Google tells me there are 2,389 Costas in the UK. I think the OP is safe.

Even if a Costa employed Mumsnetter identifies OP, she's done noting wrong.

At all.

Costa on the other hand...

And really my advice to said Costa employed Mumsnetter, is to open a detective agency with Colleen Roo . - she's wasted on Flat whites and Lemon muffin.

Blocked that did make me laugh Grin

Halfman, why do you say that then? I don't think I've said anything offensive. I'm disappointed with poor communications from a prospective employer as I think most people would be, with the goal posts being moved.
