GTA, Friday the 13th, 11 year olds playing these games!??

My 11 year old boy has just started high school. To be honest he's always struggled to make friends, we've barely had anyone over for tea for years and he's always refused a birthday party since he was 7. He hates football and isn't a typical stereotype boy. But at the same time he appears happy, teachers always tell me he's fine at school and is popular and he seems happy in his own skin.
I really hoped at high school he'd find a group of friends like him but he seems to have stuck with 2 boys from primary school so far who seem to be fine hanging around him at school but are ignoring him on line out of school and not messaging him back when he messages.
My heart breaks for him a bit and we had a chat tonight and he said he was upset he was being ignored by these 2 but he said they were probably online playing GTA and Friday the 13th. Now I'm a bit clueless about these games but googled them and there's no way I want my 11 year old playing those games. I asked him if he wanted to play them (just to see what his thoughts are about them) and he said no way but he said most of the boys play them at school so he has no one to join on line with as he does Minecraft and no one is interested. AIBU to say these games are not appropriate for years yet? My son tells me their mum's know they play it. Am I being too strict or are they insane? My son loves his computer but I think remains quite innocent in his gaming. He does have interests outside of school but his interests are not in sport so he seems to alienate himself from the boys already before we even get to the big bad games!

No I agree with you. Your DS sounds a bit like DD.
My DD is the same age as your DS, and many of her friends are on Instagram, tiktok, and are into fake nails and stuff, it's funny isnt it how some children seem to at this age be into things far too mature for them.

He will find his group of friends who are interested in the same as him, does his school do any IT based after school clubs he could maybe join in with?

My DS1 is 12, nearly 13 and still plays Minecraft, he's not allowed to play horror games / GTA and wouldn't want to. He was lucky to have a few similar friends from primary school that he has stayed friends with, but has made more friends at high school through clubs - in his case coding and Warhammer. So definitely worth seeing what's on offer at the school.
