Can anyone help? Currently looking to move from Barnet to either Welwyn garden city or Broxbourne, due to house prices being reasonable and only have a fairly small budget. Have an 11 year old boy and want to try and make sure I get him into a good school in either of these areas. Been told Stanborough school is good in Welwyn? But getting mixed reviews on here. Can anyone advise me of best secondary. Also told Broxbourne school good but reading area is not so good. So confused, have a budget of 400k so can only move to certain . areas. Any advice would be much appreciated.

I'd recommend joining the WGC Mums group on Facebook and asking in there. Honestly though, you will still only get anecdotal opinions.
There are 3 secondaries in WGC, all have their good and bad points. My DC aren't secondary age yet so I'm afraid I can't help further than that.

I would definitely choose WGC over broxbourne.

WGC has its rough parts but nothing like broxbournes rough parts.

Depending on what size house you are looking for, you should also consider Hertford, Ware and Hitchin. Especially if you want good schools.

Yes agree with the previous poster that schools in Herts are best in Hertford/Hitchin. Hitchin cheaper than WGC and much nicer.

Ware is also cheaper than Hertford and Hitchin but (IMO) better than WGC.

Have you thought of going a bit further out. Ampthill and Flitwick have good schools. Ampthill is lovely

Will have a look but didn't really want to go too far out, felt like Welwyn had the best transport links. Thankyou so much for your response.

Just in case you hadn't seen it the 2019 Ofsted report for Stanborough has it as "requiring improvement" in all aspects except sixth form.
Assuming you are commuting, where do you need to commute to? WGC has a fast link to town but it's a big town and you will almost certainly have a long walk or drive and park to get to the station in WGC each day - expensive parking. The same for Hatfield. It may actually be a quicker commute to choose a smaller town a little further out.

Good luck with your househunt
