Reading a thread about a commute and it reminded me of something I once thought about in a gym. I was feeling exposed as up on the ladies balcony, you are actually looking down onto the heavy weights area (mostly occupied by serious male exercisers) and they in turn can see you. I always try to look at the wall in front of me but ultimately my eyes drift down to help me balance (treadmill) and then I worry that the men might think I'm ogling them! I thought how I'd love a little privacy screen around me in that situation. Also if I had to use public transport, I couldn't get lost in a book/my phone etc. as I know people can see me and I'm.woreied about forgetting myself.

So, would you buy a completely breathable - possibly with its own built in aircon - privacy cone that comes out and around your body from the waist up with an optional mesh window for you to see out but no one can see in?

It may exist in some form and if anyone wants to steal the idea you can have it Grin

No. I wouldn't. And I'm very self conscious as a person too. I think I'd feel even more self conscious with a thing like that...it would actually draw attention to me.

It also smacks of those things some Muslim women wear. As for built in aircon! That would not be viable. Too heavy.

Also..not all gyms have a "ladies' balcony" and there are gyms for women only.

This reminds me of a "would I lie to you" where David Mitchell says that his motto is to be "un-noteworthy but not un-noteworthy enough to become noteworthy"

This is definitely a situation where you would be remembered for trying to be un-noteworthy.

Only do that no one would try to talk to ne

VenusTiger · 01/10/2019 01:11

No, it’s anti social and the world doesn’t need any more in its current state.

Wouldilie2u · 01/10/2019 06:12

At the risk of a flaming haven't you just described a hi-tech burka?

RhymesWithOrange · 01/10/2019 06:31

I can absolutely guarantee 1000000000000% no one is looking at you or thinking about you in any meaningful way at the gym or in public.

GG20 · 01/10/2019 06:40

I want to know what kind of gym has a "ladies balcony"! Confused

Angrybird123 · 01/10/2019 07:23

That would be like a list celebs who go out in big dark glasses and hats.. Guess what, people notice them. Those that chuck on jeans and a hoodie, no make up, and go shopping don't get bothered cis no one really looks that hard at anyone else.

YES

What do you mean by forgetting yourself? What would happen?

Op I'm assuming you are joking and just pulling out leg, if you aren't then won't wearing a cone on your body from waist up look weird (think of what others would think , a cone with just legs sticking out)...

Op if you are that self conscious about looking over the balcony look to the side or the wall directly opposite rather than looking down (I mean how weird would you look on a treadmill with a cone on...that wouldn't give you privacy, that would have everyone looking at you)

If the men seeing the women is bothering you that much can't you just change to another gym that has a layout that suits you better

Tonnerre · 01/10/2019 08:04

Goodness, it's never once occurred to me to worry about "forgetting myself" whilst reading in public, and I do it an awful lot. And I don't really think anyone cares where you're looking whilst in the gym. So I'm afraid I won't be a customer.

Sagradafamiliar · 01/10/2019 08:15

Social anxiety can be treated in less conspicuous ways.

Bring back broadsheet newspapers. They are excellent for hiding behind!
It's a bit tricky broadsheeting whilst treadmilling, though.Grin

Damntheman · 01/10/2019 10:18

Ladies balcony? Wtf? Who even calls it that?? In my gym it's mostly men on the treadmills while the women lift weights in the free weight section. Ladies Balcony ffs..

You Ok hun?
The ladies area in my gym, is separate to the main gym, though ladies can use any part of the gym just in this particular area there is a sign that says 'No males beyond this point'. It's quite a common thing in gym and not my invention Hmm

These cones I described, I know that they would stand out a mile but I was imagining a world where it was more commonplace and accepted(like face masks in China etc.) so if I/you wore one, we wouldn't stand out.

StyleO · 01/10/2019 15:07

(It just so happens the ladies area is on a balcony hence the term 'ladies balcony')

Sounds good to me, maybe it would have a built-in screen where you could watch Netflix on the go, or face-time other cone-wearers 😂

How sad that you're worried about forgetting yourself in a good book. Some of my best chats with strangers have been due to ugly crying at a good film on an airplane or in a good book on a train.

StyleO · 01/10/2019 17:35

@MayFaner
That's the spirit! Grin
