To think this Gumtree reply is insincere?

Just listed a bike on Gumtree and within about 2 mins of posting had a message “I’m interested in your bike when can I collect?”

Ad is still showing as 0 views so think he hasn’t even read it.

It’s a good bike for a good price so potentially he could be really keen but really no questions, no mention of a test ride and why buy a women’s bike so quickly?

Had similar quick messages and then no further replies when I used freecycle but can’t quite see the angle here?!

Am I being paranoid?

My ads always show as no views until the next day. Think it gets updates overnights

Could just be excellent timing that he looked just after you'd posted

Only one way to find out OP . I'd see no reason to not believe him so far

singme · 29/09/2019 13:22

I was wondering if you can set it to get notifications when items you are interested in come up for sale?

Yes I guess there’s no harm in replying.... just didn’t expect it so quickly!

You want to sell a bike, someone wants to buy it.
Seems like the website is serving exactly it's purpose.

HaveeeeYouMetTed · 29/09/2019 13:26

What is there to be paranoid about? Hmm

If the person is willing to pay whatever you've asked for the bike then surely that's the whole process of these websites?

onanothertrain · 29/09/2019 13:35

FFS. Paranoid? Why??

Ironytheoppositeofwrinkly · 29/09/2019 13:39

I think maybe the OP is worried that the man is going to come and collect, and do something dodgy like ride off without paying, possibly becoming violent if she tries to stop him? You do hear about things like that. It'd be odd though, unless his profile looks like it's not real?

acatcalledjohn · 29/09/2019 13:40

I wouldn't be suspicious so much as fucked off with their lack of basic manners. No greeting, no please.

“I’m interested in your bike when can I collect?”

That's enough to make me tell them no.

Singlenotsingle · 29/09/2019 13:41

I don't trust Gumtree, after unpleasant experiences

Tightforthyme · 29/09/2019 13:52

There's an FAQ section on Gumtree about red flag behaviour which I would advise checking.

Could be completely legit but either way you can protect yourself by following the advice like using paypal, making sure you have receipt of the cash, making sure all communication stays on the Gumtree website etc

Helped DH and I when a dodgy person showed interest in a table we were selling

Straycatstrut · 29/09/2019 13:53

My dad uses it a lot and is very polite in person but his messages are very short and to the point like that. I see no issue with the message.

My ex sold a lot of his music gear on there and I hated it when strangers would come round into our home where our kids were. I may have anxiety but still I just found it awkward and uncomfortable. I wouldn't use it as a single mum.

Sparklesocks · 29/09/2019 13:56

I think the key would be in their next move, if there’s talk of PayPal or a sob story then best to avoid - but it might just be someone who happened to be online when it went up and just has an abrupt messaging style.

singme · 29/09/2019 14:12

Ok so consensus is I ABU. Ive not got much experience with Gumtree. It just seemed like a relatively quick response for quite a specific bike. I’ll let you know how it goes!

OP posts:
coconuttelegraph · 29/09/2019 14:15

I'd be very suspicious, ime gumtree is a haven for scammers. I'd be very surprised if this results in a genuine sale

singme · 29/09/2019 14:16

Cross posted with all the other responses. I’ll try the FAQ as well. Thank you!

I don't sell much on gumtree but I definitely browse it for gardening items and unwanted plants.

I use short sentences and to the point like this because I sometimes don't care enough as awful as that sounds. If i know it's local, I am ready to go get it, I ask when can I get it.

Also consider maybe it's someone with a language barrier

singme · 02/10/2019 19:56

Update. Sale went totally fine! Had a fright after as one the bank notes had quite dodgy looking print but the bank checked them all and they were legit. Seems RBS don’t print the best notes Confused

OP posts:
acatcalledjohn · 03/10/2019 08:45

RBS don't print notes...none of the banks do. DeLaRue does.

Glad sale went well.
