To buy a mud kitchen a 9 year old

So.. she has asked for a mud kitchen for Christmas(her main present). They had one at school which she enjoyed but it broke. She makes a beeline to the one at the pub we regularly go to. Husband isn't keen as he doesn't think it will be used and thinks it's just novelty and she's too old.

She's also crazy tall so that's another thing to factor in because many of them are quite small and won't be practical for her.

Would you get one? If so, do you know of any taller ones? I'm rubbish at DIY so although they are theoretically easy to build, I would make a mess of it and husband won't build one.

If she wants it get her one. Fgs she is only 9! Would he rather she asked for an iphone!?

Might be worth google for sites that might make them?

Some schools just a have a second hand kitchen sink unit- you can get one for free I am due if you advertise.

I'd get her the things needed for the mud kitchen, and then help her to put it together. but then again, mud is my thing.

Why wouldn't her dad help her with something she actually wants? Is he a bit of a cunt?

i bought one from ebay it was really well made, they she can use it also for planting and gardening etc. sounds like she likes the outdoor life so i would encourage growing from seen and maybe a frog garden! (am getting carried away)

I have no idea what one looks like but can you raise it with a pallet (painted) or Ikea cheap coffee table?
I don’t think you can get a second hand one unless it’s in pristine condition. Not as her main Christmas present.

If that's what she wants, I think it's a really lovely thing to enjoy and far better than all the plastic crap most children seem to want. I think the mud kitchens that are for sale would be a bit small though so you'd have to improvise something and maybe make it a bit more 'grown up' so it has more longevity. Maybe some kind of outdoor den with mud pie facilities?!

My 8yo uses our mud kitchen. I think the way they play with it changes as they get older, but it is a good toy.

I think it’s amazing she still wants this type of gift, you are obviously a great parent! I second the idea of getting a second hand kitchen sink/unit and putting it together. If it’s Xmas though you’ll need some help building it as a surprise rather than getting her involved unless she doesn’t believe in FC anymore (my 9 yr old doesn’t).

Omg they are brilliant- my DD would have loved that at all ages from 1-10. She's still a mucky puppy so would probably like it still. Even if it gets 1-1.5 years of use, that's worth it isn't it?

I would ask for recommendations for people who make pallet furniture on FB / Social media in the area you live. They would be able to make a mud kitchen for her height, and at a much more reasonable cost than buying a ready made one.

This way you can also have an input into what you would like and tailor it to her age. A lot of the pre-made ones will be too small and aimed at a much younger age range.

All she has asked for for her birthday next week and Christmas is the mud kitchen, a Pokemon DVD and a fancy toothpaste 😂.

I will persuade the husband.

Now I think of it, there is a local charity that makes garden furniture. I'll have a word with them to see if they'll make a taller one.

I've just had a look and on eBay tgere is a page for handmade mud kitchens, made to order, £65. Maybe you could ask them to make it slightly taller? Plus it looks much sturdier than the flimsy ones Argos et al are advertising got £100+

I would but I’d make it so it can develop into a little potting bench so you can start growing seeds if she fancies that. Maybe a coldframe too.

You could make your own mud kitchen, lots of easy ideas available.

we got one for my ds age 3. he absolutely love it. we live in a warm country so it's used alot. we also do lots of experiments on it. I think it's a lovely outdoor item to have for kids.

She's 9 ffs! Buy her the bloody mud kitchen!!

As for your partner saying 'she's too old' give his head a wobble. She isn't 15! And even then so blood what. If she wants a mud kitchen then too, buy her one.

A "fancy" toothpaste is just a toothpaste that she wants to try because it has a picture of a toad on the front. 🤣

Do you both need to lighten up a bit? These are the sorts of things i'd make or buy for kids that aren't even mine.
