To ask wtf is with the bottom feeder Daily Mail commenters?

I have a job somewhat related to PR so I’m exposed to social media (YouTube, Instagram, Twitter), as well as online newspapers a lot. I see a lot of comments on these platforms & the one thing that stands out is how absolutely toxic the Mail Online commenters are. Much more so than any other medium including Twitter.

It honestly disturbs me. Every article (especially about a woman) usually results in a mass pile on for literally no reason. I’m just wondering why DM is SO much worse than other platforms? & if any of these commenters use Mumsnet (which I’m sure they do) wtf why do you do it? I honestly feel drained every time I see the site. A woman just existing results in a mass hysterical pile on 90% of the time.

Inadequate little men venting their spite. Don’t feel drained or disturbed. Feel pity instead.

Wehttam · 25/09/2019 23:51

Pity them.

Tillygetsit · 26/09/2019 00:04

I always imagine they're written by Piers Morgan. Pathetic twats.

Wellhelloxx11xx · 26/09/2019 00:06

Iamthewombat

They actually have a much higher female readership than male 😫 & I do think more women comment on the celeb stories.

People are always talking about how toxic social media is (Twitter, Instagram). Honestly the Mail is so much more toxic in terms of its comments. It honestly shocked me. Twitter is waaaay more positive.

Having worked as a journalist I can emphatically say there is a reason for the never read below the line rule! Have to say I find the Guardian comments fucking awful. Sometimes it’s like the Mail comments on cheap speed.

GunpowderGelatine · 26/09/2019 00:20

Because their demographic is usually men who hate women who are too fat, too thin, too smart, not smart enough, scruffy, well dressed, beautiful, ugly, a mum or a single woman, the list goes in. I don't know exactly what they expect in women but I am 99% sure they're all balding losers with micro penises

user1473878824 · 26/09/2019 00:20

Online comments are the green ink brigade. Anyone who comments on newspaper articles is instantly nuts in my book.

Wellhelloxx11xx · 26/09/2019 08:42

I sadly have to read it due to work 😫 I try to minimise as much as possible

The comments on multiple articles about the Duchess of Sussex are particularly and depressingly venomous.

Even the articles themselves are horrible.

FinallyHere · 26/09/2019 18:07

I do not admire the DM

Several friends and family sort of agree but continue to buy it as a guilty pleasure for the celebrity gossip.

A while back, I stopped trying to argue them out of it and instead offered £20 cash for anyone who could show my a story in the , however brief, that is warm and generous to a women, without using it to belittle another woman.

That £20 still sits on my dressing table.

Hopoindown31 · 26/09/2019 18:12

I’m just wondering why DM is SO much worse than other platforms?

Really? I mean given the history of that newspaper you are really wondering why it's internet article comments are worse than other platforms? Really? Hmm

ooooohbetty · 26/09/2019 18:14

You are joking? Yes it's venomous but so are loads of comments on twitter.

22Giraffes · 26/09/2019 18:19

Reading the comments is one of my guilty pleasures Blush some are vile, some are just crazy but there are some hilarious gems occasionally!

GinDaddy · 26/09/2019 18:31

I always find it amusing and curious that many people's answer to why this is the case, is "inadequate little men"...

Agatha Christie taught us decades ago that when it comes to written spite and vitriol, it's the women (often older, often should know better) who are actually doing the penning

On most of the "Katy Perry in bikini" photo stories the Mail runs, I'd wager 90% of the negative comments are women writing about and criticising other women.

That's the horrifying truth - there's nowt so vitriolic and spiteful as women piling in and criticising perceived obesity, being catty about another woman's body shape etc

TulipsTulipsTulips · 26/09/2019 18:34

No idea OP but the Daily Telegraph comments are awful, a lot of them sound as though they’re written by white supremacists.

ThinkerThunkk · 26/09/2019 18:34

The DM was opened as a womens alternative to broadsheets.

I used to like the DM, it has nice weather pictures Blush but I simply cannot abide it now. I cant read it and all traces of it are removed from apps.

A survey in 2014 found the average age of its readers was 58, and it had the lowest demographic for 15- to 44-year-olds among the major British dailies. Uniquely for a British daily newspaper, it has a majority female readership, with women making up 52–55% of its readers

ThatssomebadhatHarry · 26/09/2019 18:37

Agreed it’s quite vile. They love mumsnet though! Grin

MrsMaiselsMuff · 26/09/2019 18:39

It's always been bad, but it has grown worse since Brexit. Legitimised bigotry.

Pitterpatterpettysteps · 26/09/2019 18:41

The Guardian no longer allows comments on articles covering even remotely contentious subjects, if it did, I suspect the comments would be just as rabid as those seen on the DM.

Plenty of horrible comments on Instagram etc, but more easily removed by the page owner perhaps?

Wellhelloxx11xx · 26/09/2019 19:36

It’s nowhere near the same ratio. From what I see Instagram is around 5-10% negative, Mail Online usually Over 50%

OP posts:
JoyceJeffries · 26/09/2019 19:41

It is pretty vile but there is far, far worse on twitter.

ShirleyPhallus · 26/09/2019 19:47

It is vile, but having read similar comments on here re the DOS I’m not entirely surprised

Also any time they have a woman in a bikini and she doesn’t have a pancake flat stomach it is ALWAYS “she’s pregnant!!”

Kiwiinkits · 26/09/2019 19:49

I have come to the conclusion that actually, the world is full of small-minded, bigoted, poorly-educated twats. I was living in a bubble before.
I have just read comment after comment saying climate change is a hoax and Greta is a conspiracy Hmm. There are more people out there that believe this shit than you think!

Kiwiinkits · 26/09/2019 19:50

Twitter is an entirely different demographic than the DM.
