A long time sufferer of trichotillomania. I can’t stop pulling out hair from the crown of my head, I do it absent mindedly , only till I find a huge bunch of hair beside me or stick to the surface next to me that the guilt sets in. I’ve tried the tricks of keeping my hands busy whenever the urge comes but nothing’s worked in 13 years. So fed up with myself arghhh! I have very spare hair on my crown now but no obvious bald patches, friends and family in RL don’t know about it and I tie my hair up all the time so it’s not apparent till I go and get my hair done nearly once a year or two .

Does anybody have any tips or tricks?

I used to dye my hair a lot of crazy colours and would love the upkeep of it, but I knew deep down I had horrid patches of wiry/wispy hair. Just really hate it, my dread is that DD will start to copy as she’s 4 and mimicking absolutely everything at the moment Sad

There was a documentary on channel 4 a few years ago about Trichotillomania. I think it was called "girls on the pull".
The women featured in the documentary had some success with applied hairpieces that were designed by a woman who has the same condition.
I don't know if this is something you would consider yourself or what the cost implications would be, but I think that this was the woman in the documentary ...

Good luck to you, OP.

As someone who has (now mild) trich plus another form of alopecia and a Lucinda Ellery full head weave I can tell you that the weave won’t stop the pulling. It’s too easy to reach the natural hair under the weave.

Have you tried an elastic band round the wrist and snapping it instead when the urge comes on?

I vaguely remember seeing a programme about a lady who fit headpieces ! Glad I weren’t imagining it! I’ve tried the wrist band thing and also having a fidget spinner type thing. I pull mostly when I’m on my phone so have been limiting screen one exactly for that reason
