What is that smell - chemical

Posting here for traffic - also name changed

Just got up to sort dd and while on the hall landing I could smell a chemical, first thoughts was petrol.
I admit I panicked a little and checked no one put petrol through the letter box. Couldn't find source of the smell so woke my dh to help investigate.

He went on a sniff tour round the house and was ages in the kitchen so I went after him. It's much stronger in there. But we still can't find a source. It's left me feeling uncomfortable.

Smell like a chemical or turps like smell...
Any thoughts?

Could it be something coming up through the sink? Have you sniffed outside to see if the smell is in the air? My house has stunk of shit for weeks thanks to muck spreading. Luckily the smell doesnt cling to the washing.

OrangeJustice · 18/09/2019 03:37

(I’m not spreading muck in the house obviously)

Whatsthesmell · 18/09/2019 03:41

It's not stronger in the sink. I didn't go outside since we're both in our underwear but I did shove my nose out the window and that smells fine.
From what I can tell it's definitely coming from the kitchen but can't find where and I don't know whether to be worried.

How strange. I remember once sniffing and wondering what on earth the smell was in our kitchen only to discover that dh had but a used fuel filter from the car in the kitchen bin Hmm He’s got better car maintenance manners these days.

Hope you find the source.

OrangeJustice · 18/09/2019 03:48

And yeah muck spraying is terribly antisocial but par for the course rurally I suppose. Better than bonfires 🔥

beluga425 · 18/09/2019 04:01

That is so weird.

I was woken up by something else but couldn't get back to sleep because of a strange turps smell. I came on here to take my mind off it.

Whatsthesmell · 18/09/2019 04:04

Very much better than bonfires!

It's definitely not anything like that, considering he helped look for smell. I just can't place it.

Just been up to DD again and the smell can still be smelt from the upstairs landing. It's driving me crazy.

Im hopefully just tired, but my first reaction was to wake the children and get out the house. But since no alarm had gone off I'm hoping we aren't in danger.
Dh has gone back to sleep so least he's not worried.

Hopefully it’ll be gone in the morning or you’ll find the source.

wheresmymojo · 18/09/2019 04:48

I'm assuming you checked any gas hobs/oven?

Whatsthesmell · 18/09/2019 12:54

Smell still there this morning but not as strong. We checked all gas appliances etc and it wasn't stronger near them and everything was off/no obvious sign off leakage. Seems to be gone now / cooking, nappies, kids etc is masking it

Could it be a rotten potato?

0hT00dles · 18/09/2019 13:12

Could it be a nappy somewhere?

We smelt gas in our garden one night. Really strongly. Called the gas company to come check it out. He smelt it too. Got his machines out, checked everywhere. Nothing registering. Smell still there.

2 days later went in the lane way between our houses. Turned out to be a dead bird. The heat made it smell really quickly.

Whatsthesmell · 18/09/2019 13:19

I have a good look and can't see anything. The smell has massively lessened so don't think anything rotten is lurking. Just so strange. Wonder if it'll be back tonight stronger

Whereabouts are you OP? I kept noticing a weird smell in the house yesterday.

magicmallow · 18/09/2019 13:23

I also had a weird house smell yesterday! Must be something in the air.... !!

picklemepopcorn · 18/09/2019 13:27

Nail varnish remover?

Whatsthesmell · 18/09/2019 14:07

Not nail varnish remover.
I checked for spills, cleaning cupboard, checked oven, hobs, boiler, sink, fridge, freezer, food cupboard I checked for all the obvious stuff. Smell wasn't there went I went to bed at around 11pm but was very stronger and could be smelt upstairs by 3am.There is no point of the kitchen the smell is stronger.
@MaxNormal I'm in Glasgow.

My house stinks of onions and actual shit this morning thanks to some sort of combined harvesting and fertilising event in the nearby fields. It’s an interesting combination.

MrFlibblesEyes · 18/09/2019 15:21

There's not a mouldy orange anywhere is there? They have a really weird chemically smell.

MaxNormal · 18/09/2019 15:23

@07Whatsthesmell that's so weird, so am I!

Kam610 · 18/09/2019 15:32

A few years ago I once woke to the smell of fuel. At first I thought it was paint. Went through the house and turned out our oil boiler had exploded and oil was spilling out under the floorboards. If you have oil central heating could it be an oil leak? Obviously my case was extreme and the house could have been burned to a crisp, but that smell unfortunately lingered for months.

Whatsthesmell · 18/09/2019 17:17

Oh @OrangeJustice that's a stinky combination Grin
@MaxNormal what are the chances. Had your smell gone.

@Kam610 what a scary experience. Thankfully I don't have an oil boiler.
