Hello. I was bitten by an insect last month and since then i have had issues with my health.

I had a year infection last week amd was given amoxicillin. I had muscle and joint paind from it including pins and needles. Doctor said stop taking to tablets which i have but it has been 2 days and the pain is not as severe, bit i am still feeling flashes of pain around my body.

Anyone else had this? How long do these effects last? Woupd i be unreasonable to ring the doctor again or just waot it out?

Weeks. Also do not be alarmed if you have massive blood filled blisters come up around your groin or delicates. They are usually a late symptom for me but always happen.

Surfskatefamily · 17/09/2019 21:06

Amoxicillin hurts my digestive system big time (tho I have ibs so am fairly sensitive), and I also get a metallic taste in my mouth.

HeadLikeAFuckinOrange · 17/09/2019 21:08

Not me, but my DD is allergic to it. She came up in terrible blisters up and down her legs and feet, couldn't go to nursery for nearly 3wks as she simply couldn't walk. She was under the weather for an extended period of time. As a precaution she now can't be prescribed any penicillin-based drug.

Hope you're feeling better soon OP Smile

I get a hideous itchy rash from amoxicillin. Have you been taking piriton OP? That usually reduces the symptoms.

Singlebutmarried · 17/09/2019 21:16

I’m ok in this one but
Co amocyclav I’m not. That seizes my joints within a couple of tablets.

murasaki · 17/09/2019 21:18

I do, and am allergic to penecillin - have you checked this. Erythromycin and Clarythromicin (sp) are good substitutes.

Beaverdam · 17/09/2019 21:19

I have no idea what piriton is but i will be getting that tomorrow.

It seems that antibiotics gives people various symptoms. I had no idea.

Ive been fine with it up until last year, at 55 i suddenly developed a penicillin allergy.. Flu like symptoms and huge dark red inflamed rash from head to toe. Antihistamines were prescribed by doc very quickly the same day.

recklessruby · 17/09/2019 21:31

Dd is allergic to all forms of penicillin and has to have alternatives.
She gets red blotches and finds it hard to breathe.
I m fine with it but often get stomach upsets on it.

SpringFan · 17/09/2019 21:36

I am allergic to it and another group of antibiotics - my lips and tongue swell and I have the classic butterfly rash.
However, I wonder if your reaction, which isn't a common side effect of Amoxicillin, is actually linked to the insect bite you had- sometimes you can get a reaction which includes muscle pain when given some antibiotics following a tick or louse borne infection . I think you should contact the GP and remind him/her about the insect bite especially if was abroad.

TwattingDog · 17/09/2019 21:40

My DH is allergic to penicillin based meds as we discovered last year. He came out in a horrendous lumpy rash on his hands and feet. This lasted weeks, even though he stopped the pills. All the skin on both hands and feet peeled off after about a month.

He was livid - 30+ years of hard skin on his hands from farming, mechanics, and bloody hard graft in the military was gone, leaving him with tender baby soft skin. It's taken him another year to build up any resistance to heat (mugs, hot water etc)..

murasaki · 17/09/2019 21:43

@beaverdam - my throat swells up and my eczema crusts over. Nice. But a friend of mine kept getting thrush an d being given amoxycillin, and when I suggested she might be at least in tolerant and to try the others, it disappeared.

SuntanC · 17/09/2019 22:07

Just an alternative thought- is it the red and yellow amoxicillin capsules? As I thought I was allergic to amoxicillin, but it turns out it was sunset yellow food colouring in the capsule case that caused my reaction.

QueenRefusenik · 17/09/2019 22:10

Taking amoxicillin at the moment and I have that horrible taste in my mouth a pp mentioned and also randomly aching teeth. Otherwise OK!

Fruitbatdancer · 17/09/2019 22:33

Hmm interesting. About 6 months ago I had somethjng very similar. An insect bite on my head, I had a rash on face and scalp, doc gave antibiotics, face blew up like I’d been in a fight, dreadful all over pain. Felt like flu without snot. Rash made way down body, face was massive and swollen, after 3 days and 2 more doc visits and piriton, I went cold turkey, I was getting worse not better and didn’t know what was causing it (the bite, The amoxicillin or the piriton/ ibuprofen. 48 hours later I was on mend thank god. Still don’t know, but will tread carefully before I take amoxicillin again incase! Wish you better soon!

TooMinty · 17/09/2019 22:41

I'm allergic to penicillin, my lips swell up. I only found out a couple of years ago and I'm 40! And it didn't clear up my mastitis so I ended up with an abscess 😡

BeaLola · 17/09/2019 23:38

I am allergic to it and klaricid- had a horrible all over blister like rash. I'm not allergic to penicillin though. Hope you feel better soonest
