Cost of year 7 trip

I’ve just had an email with the details of the year 7 trip to PGL, it costs £710!

They have chosen to go to PGL in France which I’m sure hugely increases the prices, I’m pretty sure the primary school trip to PGL was around £400 and in the UK.

AIBU to think that this is a ridiculous cost for a year 7 trip. Also we need to pay the deposit in two weeks time, it seems very early to commit to such a costly trip as there is a fair amount of movement between schools at the start of year 7.

Our scouts just got back from a similar trip abroad and the price was similar too. It seems so expensive as we are in a deprived area and most parents can’t afford it.

It's obscene for what it is, having done the PGL thing before. Easier to say no to though when it is that price.

I've told mine they get one abroad trip with the school during secondary and not to waste it on stuff that wasn't amazing.

I'll bet if you offered ds £750 in cold hard cash he wouldn't choose to spend it on this trip (not that I think you should give him cash I just mean as a hypothetical situation for him to ponder on).

Ds’s school trip is £2,000. Then spending money, food money, clothes on top. We are looking at around £3,000-£3,500 all in

I agree with the poster who says too much drama. My ds’s school had no trips in year 7. Not heard anything in year 8 yet . But if I got I request for that kind of money it wouldn’t happen.

The only reason I would pay for an expensive school trip in school is if it was something that benefitted his education

Yes, 16 form entry is 480 children in a year group.
The school does have 2 sites so in reality it does feel smaller than that!

sorry for the derail all 😬

My DD is going on a school PGL trip to France next year costing £650, but this is a week long trip with visits to WW1 sites in Belgium, a day at Eurodisney and a day in Paris visiting Eiffel Tower and a boat trip on the Seine amongst other things. It’s a lot of money, but they are packing in a lot of things during that week.

I think also a consideration should be done as to whether this would ever be possible as a family holiday.

Canoeing in France may be within some families budgets but a family trip to China would be impossible. So if dc can do a trip to China then what an amazing experience. But paying an arm and a leg for something that could be done in budget as a family is silly.

Cardboardumbrella · 11/09/2019 17:13

That’s my thought Bernadette. I’ve paid around £700 for a school trip for my older child to Iceland - it’s an amazing experience that couldn’t be replicated anywhere else for less. I don’t feel PGL in France is very much different to PGL in the UK.

I'm paying £1750 for DS (year 9) to go skiing in the USA. I am happy to pay it it is not an experience I will be able to give him.
The school has been running a US or Canada ski trip every other year since I was there in the 90s always 40 places and was £1200 when I was there.
This is a state school in the poorer (by comparison) part of a well off Midlands borough.

I wouldn't stress about it too much. My children knew before starting secondary school that they could go on one school trip each (to a maximum value because at their school there's a ridiculously expensive trip every two years). They have picked the ones they wanted and we knew in advance so could plan.
Plenty of their friends have never been on any trips. Some of their friends seem to go on every trip. It doesn't seem to matter to any of them.
