...to change jobs.

I've been employed in my current role 21 months and I am aware of my employment rights once I hit the 24 month mark.
For reasons based upon personal experience I want to work for an university.
Today I had an interview at a university for a 12 month contractual role. My initial thoughts were I'll go for interview practice, however I really do like the sound of the role.
The interviewer explained that the search for funding is a continuum, as they gain funding so everyone's role continues.
A friend who works at the same university in an unrelated role suggested all one needs to do is get their foot in the door, once employed, there is a wealth of job opportunities available to you and personnel move around all the time, I'm not to let the 'contractual' element put me off.
Yes, I have a mortgage and three kids so it's not a decision to be taken lightly.
It'll be more money and closer to home.
I appreciate your thoughts.

I'd go for it! You don't sound like you've had trouble getting a job in the past.

If you want to change, and you're happy to take risks with changing jobs, then go for it. I like to change jobs every 2.5 years... a change brings in its risks & opportunities to grow

How much more money? Enough to put some aside in case there are lapses in funding and you're out of work for a couple of months until you find something?

It is pretty risky at the moment, tbh. Research funding post-Brexit is not at all guaranteed, and while your friend is right that there usually are other opportunities even when funding runs out on specific projects, I would not want to take that risk right now.
