To still be so unhappy?

I have a nice house, a nice DH, a decent job. Good family and friends. I don't know why I am still so, so unhappy.

Flowers for you, sorry to hear you feel like that. May I gently say that I think it’s because happiness doesn’t come from those things. There’s nothing wrong with you in that sense, it’s an illusion that externals will make you happy. Real happiness comes from within yourself, through changing your mind, your mental habits, and when your mind is peaceful it’s happy. Have you ever done meditation?

Sunshine93 · 07/09/2019 21:31

Poor you op. Have you considered you might be depressed? Depression is a medical condition and although it can be triggered by external factors it can happen to anyone. It's a chemical imbalance. I would suggest you see your GP.

Have you thought that you might be depressed? I convinced myself that I wasn’t as I felt that I had too many good things in my life - that I didn’t ‘deserve’ to be depressed if you see what I mean. But depression is caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain, not by circumstance. If you have been unhappy for a while, please see your GP or Practice Nurse.
I hope you are feeling better soon.

@Lily2811 please please go and speak with your doctor! it doesnt make you anything but brave and strong to realise that something may not be right and you want to find a way to try and make it what you want it to be.
my father was like this, great DW, 3 kids great friends ect and new years day early morning 4 years ago he tried to kill himself. he had no clue he had PTSD and severe depression. it doesnt come with a handbook or the warning signs you'd necessarily expect but if you feel something isnt right then try to find a solution primarily for you ahead of anyone else as you deserve to be happy and i think your family and friends want you to be happy! hope i have worded it okay and havent offended anyone! good luck OP!

Surely it is caused by both?

insanemumof3 · 07/09/2019 21:45

@naboothatswho i would be inclined to agree. my father had everything going. however he had PTSD and depression (do to with the brain) however his tipping point was that he lost his job and hed always been employed since he was 16. so circumstances completely play a role in everything in life imo. :)

Thanks for your replies everyone.

@Merename no not really, do you have any tips for beginners? I find it basically impossible to silence my mind when I have tried meditation in the past my head has just what feels like a million thoughts and worries going round and round.

To the depression questions, yes I was diagnosed with depression and anxiety about ten years ago and I've struggled almost constantly since. I'm on medication and I've had tons of different kinds of therapy over the years. Starting to wonder if things will ever get better for me. Currently need to iron some clothes for work tomorrow but I just can't be bothered. I have no motivation whatsoever.

Lily I installed an app on my phone called Calm, which is for mindfulness/meditation. There is a free version, which I had for quite a while, but I upgraded to the paid version to get access to more stuff. I consider it a small investment in myself, and if I miss a day doing it, I do feel less calm and motivated. There are other apps, but this is the one I have experience of and can recomend.

Wolfiefan · 08/09/2019 18:53

It may be that you need a different dose or an entirely different medication. Can you see the GP and review it? I’ve switched and it’s been amazing. I feel like me but a me that can cope and tackle what needs to be done.

Lily2811 · 08/09/2019 19:00

@Wolfiefan I've got an appointment but it's in over two weeks time. The way I'm feeling now I don't know how I'm going to manage until then. I just feel like I don't have the energy to do anything.

Can you contact them and see if you can get an emergency appointment earlier?
