Do you know rain comes from rainforests?

I have heard none stop about brexit for the last few years and nothing but contempt for extrinction rebellion recently, but now the Amazon is burning to the ground and nobody even comments on it!

I am sick to my stomach and thinking about stockpiling for the end of the world, not for brexit.

Does anyone else care? It feels like we are all the stupid people who doesn't believe the scientists in a dooms day movie. Am I the only one? Because it sure feels like it.

Do you know rain comes from rainforests?

and honey comes from honeysuckle.

and spiders come from spiderplants.

gamerchick · 03/09/2019 13:04

The planet will purge itself from the virus that is humans eventually OP. A few nice tidal waves should do the trick.

Newearringsplease · 03/09/2019 13:06

It's rainy in rainforests they don't make rain

Hirsutefirs · 03/09/2019 13:07

Rain goes on rain forests!

JaniceBattersby · 03/09/2019 13:18

‘Nobody’s talking about it’?!

It’s all over the news.

IAmALazyArse · 03/09/2019 13:30

‘Nobody’s talking about it’?!
It’s all over the news.

Exactly! Do some people in here just not read or watch news ever?

nononever · 03/09/2019 13:34

Rainforests produce 20% of the Earth's oxygen and the reason they are called rainforests is because of the high rainfall they receive every year. Rain doesn't come from rainforests, however a huge amount of plants used in medicine are only found in rainforests. They are crucial to our long term survival.

Sindragosan · 03/09/2019 13:34

Meanwhile HS2 is destroying what's left of Britain's forests, but no one cares about that because its fine if we deforest but not other people.

jamoncrumpet · 03/09/2019 13:35

As an ex geography teacher this has made me laugh and laugh. Thanks for that OP. You are WAAAAAY off the mark.

IAmALazyArse · 03/09/2019 13:37

@Sindragosan which forests are they destroying?

Morgan12 · 03/09/2019 13:44

Rain comes from rainforests? 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

Aprillygirl · 03/09/2019 13:44

Rain comes from rainclouds last time I checked lol.

LaMarschallin · 03/09/2019 13:46

@wijjjy

That was exactly my reaction when I saw the thread title which is why I looked.
Disappointed now.

Although, I'm still on my mission to cultivate as many money plants as I can.
(Especially after that time I broke a tooth on the Royal Mint. After dinner it was...)

www.sciencemag.org/news/2017/08/trees-amazon-make-their-own-rain

The tree-induced rain clouds could have other domino effects on the weather. As those clouds release rain, they warm the atmosphere, causing air to rise and triggering circulation. Fu and colleagues believe that this circulation is large enough that it triggers the shift in wind patterns that will bring in more moisture from the ocean, they report in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

I was sure I'd read something about the trees helping to produce more rain in the regions with rain forests.

Transpiration can apparently produce large rain clouds.

I do agree though that is is being talked about - it's been on the news fair bit. I also agree our own woods could do with some attention and more protection.

DoomsdayCult · 03/09/2019 13:47

Meh. More rainforest has been burned before. It will grow back.
Forest fires happen now and then.

Lifecraft · 03/09/2019 13:52

Meanwhile HS2 is destroying what's left of Britain's forests, but no one cares about that because its fine if we deforest but not other people

Exactly. Prior to the industrial revolution, a squirrel could get from Inverness to Truro without touching the ground. We cut down all our forests and got rich. Now we live in 1st world luxury, and tell developing nations not to cut down their forests.

If we care so much, why don't we knock down all our factories and towns /cities, rip up our roads and railways, plant trees in their place, and go from there. Of course we'd all have to live in hardship, no electric or running water, but think of the planet.

CustardySergeant · 03/09/2019 13:58

I suppose you think wind comes from windfarms.

bigKiteFlying · 03/09/2019 14:04

www.scientificamerican.com/article/cutting-down-rainforests/

When Amazon rainforest disappears, so does Amazon rain.

That's the conclusion of new research that shows deforestation can significantly reduce tropical rainfall far from the area where trees have been cut down.

That's because air passing over forests picks up moisture given off by trees and plants, fueling rains. When those trees disappear, so does some of that rain.

...

The scientists' computer modeling suggests that if deforestation in the Amazon continues at the current pace, it could significantly cut rainfall hundreds of miles away over the next several decades.

The OP not wrong about rainforests impacting on precipitation levels.

Though I think she is wrong about in not being spoken about.

CornishMaid1 · 03/09/2019 14:06

I really want to know more about this rain coming from rainforests. Does someone bottle it up, fly it over and through it up in the air to make rain or do all our rainclouds blow over from the rainforest?!

I do wish spiders came from spiderplants though. I think it might make it easier to get rid of the creepy things.

MythicalBiologicalFennel · 03/09/2019 14:07

Is that you Barry? Grin

CendrillonSings · 03/09/2019 14:10

I’ll be OK when the environment collapses - the eggplants in my garden will keep me in eggs for ages...

spongemumnudiepants · 03/09/2019 14:17

The problems of the world are shoved down our throats on a daily basis @Reallywanttomovenow a lot of us are simply sick of hearing about them.

spongemumnudiepants · 03/09/2019 14:20

Rain comes from the rain forest GrinGrinGrinGrin

I have bigger worries than a burning rainforest such as feeding my dc and keeping a roof over our heads and all that.

The trees will grow back.
