Dd needs a DBS check at college.
She has recently changed both her first name and second name. First name slightly and second name fully.
Think Elizabeth Jones to Eliza Smith.

For evidence she has handed in her birth cert in her birth name.
Her deed poll in her new name.
Her bank statement in her new name.
She has her national insurance letter but that isn't dated so they wont accept it.

Apart from her bus pass this is the only evidence she has as she is 16 in her new name.

However she DOES have a valid still in date passport in her old name. We tried to hand this in alongside her deed poll as the info I've read on the Government site suggests this is okay as long as the deed poll change is recent.

College have advised that she gets a new passport. This is going to cost me £75 at a time I can't really afford it and we are not in a position to travel so paying purely for the purpose of the DBS check.

Is there no way DBS will accept the in date but old name passport with the deed poll alongside the other evidence ? :(

Is there anything else we can can use instead?

Thanks in advance if anyone can help!

Hi there are different "routes" of DBS checks-please see link

www.gov.uk/guidance/documents-the-applicant-must-provide

Hope this helps Smile

I confirm identity documents for applicants who have submitted online DBS applications with our company. I cannot see why the college think a passport and birth certificate are any different to each other in this instance, as long as the date on the passport is correct. They should just need to check a box to confirm that they have seen evidence of any name changes.

MudDog · 01/09/2019 19:10

Thanks Lex will have a look.

Bobbindale yes that is what dd did. She did it online on their computers and they confirm identity documents and pay.

Do copies of the documents actually go off to the dbs people?

I have had issues with doctors with 2 names - married and professional not submitting online so I have to do those ones on paper

They do have a paper option

No I don’t send them off I have just witnessed them, there is a checklist

Celticrose · 01/09/2019 19:35

Would the passport office not just change her name on the passport. When I got married I just sent them my passport and they changed the name on it and returned it. Not sure how much that would cost but maybe they don't do that nowadays

Celticrose · 01/09/2019 19:36

I obviously sent them my marriage certificate as well

lyralalala · 01/09/2019 19:40

Best thing to do is call their helpline. You might find the college staff haven't dealt with it before. The helpline are really good at pointing in the right direction with stuff.

Celticrose · 01/09/2019 19:43

I just checked and they do name changes on passport for people who have name changed by deed poll but it appears to be free. Check out the gov website

afromom · 01/09/2019 19:47

Is she still in school/college? A letter from the head teacher/college principal is accepted.

Twickerhun · 01/09/2019 19:49

My passport is in the ‘wrong’ old name and it’s been fine for two recent dbs checks.

Kuponut · 01/09/2019 20:01

My name change was so long ago I didn't really have the issue - but there are various combinations of documents you can use for the ID verification that get ridiculously complex so you should be able to put something together - particularly if you've got the evidence of the name change.

One thing I did get suggested to me (mine was a name change done via the legal process as a child when my mum remarried) was that on my marriage certificate the registrar listed my maiden name as X, previously known as Y - just as an extra layer of verification linking my name history together (especially as I work in a job requiring enhanced DBS disclosures)

Muggedoffit · 01/09/2019 20:05

All ID docs need to be in current legal name.

Unless your dd wants to go the fingerprint route, then a new passport is the best option.

Provisional driving licence?

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 01/09/2019 20:15

I have my usual name in the main bit and "the holder is also know as [my work name]" in my passport. As far as I remember it was added for me in about five days, when I sent my passport away; it might be worth ringing the passport office and finding out whether they will still do that. It was certainly a lot cheaper than getting a new one.

Bobbindale · 01/09/2019 21:21

@MudDog no they dont go off to DBS. College will just hold them on file.
