here

I see these vans all over the place and they are so stupid. There's one with a tin of tinned tomatoes on it next to a busty girl - the slogan is "big and juicy".

a) what century are we in and
b) I would not be impressed if someone compared my breasts to a tin of plum tomatoes

There's also one with a tin of tuna next to a girl and the slogan says "flakey" and "chunky".

Idiots.

I think you'll find this is "ironic" and "postmodern".

BettySpaghetti · 07/08/2007 14:06

I agree that they just suggest poor quality, cheap, budget supermarket food and that the overall look of the ad is very dated.

weirdbird · 07/08/2007 21:27

TBH more and more the sexist adds just make me think I won't "ever" buy that..

And thats just as much the ones like the diet coke add that has a topless guy on.

TheHerdNerd · 07/08/2007 21:54

This is small fry, though. She's got big boobs. It's not making any statements contrary to women in general, bar "We think that women with big boobs will be looked at by men". Well, duh.

The really sexist adverts are the one that are actually trying to sell to women but assume that all women are thick - namely every single shampoo/cleaning product/hair dye/women's car insurance/high fibre breakfast cereal advert I've ever seen. I mute the telly now when I see these simpering, brain-free idiots come on the box: "Look, laydeez! I'm going to spout some meaningless sciento-babble at you in the certain belief that you'll buy this product because it's got fruit waxes, healing grape extract and good bacteria, and you're as thick as shit!"

THAT'S sexist.

weirdbird · 07/08/2007 22:54

The boots one is making me see red every time I watch it at the moment, every person on the beach will expect you to look like this...

You need to spend lots of money trying to conform to our stereotype of what a women should look like.

It just makes women feel bad about themselves, I hate the message it is sending to my DD's about there body.

Am composing a letter to Boots to complain, as it won't change until we do something

margoandjerry · 07/08/2007 22:56

I agree weirdbird. That Boots one is quite odd and not very in keeping with Boots' image as the friendly local chemist.

This is nila

For "people", do not read "women", obviously. yuck.

(I was confused with nisa when I saw the OP - this lot obv different)

PeachesMcLean · 07/08/2007 23:09

HerdNerd has a point about the scale of sexist advertising but I wouldn't dismiss this as small fry. Overtly crass and bad taste imo. FGS, what century do they think we live in? And brand awareness doesn't always lead to sales does it? There is such a thing as bad publicity.

margoandjerry · 07/08/2007 23:10

I don't think it's small fry either.

Women = commodities?

As for the roasted one...what are they saying, exactly? Would love to get their chief exec to look me in the eye and explain exactly what he meant by that.
